Without a word of a lie, I always, always enjoy my visits to Calmsley Hill City Farm. There is just such an authentic feel about the place it’s hard not to leave smiling. And at a time when the crucial work that farmers do needs more love and understanding than ever before, Calmsley Hill is the perfect place to teach your little ones about life on the land.
Once known as Fairfield City Farm, the property has been in action since 1806. It’s a fabulous day out for kids, especially in the spring when there is an abundance of gorgeous babies to cuddle.
You and your children will have the opportunity get up close and personal with all sorts of furry friends at the farmyard nursery, such as goats, ducks, chickens, lambs, calves, piglets, mice, ferrets and rabbits.
You can try your hand at milking a cow too – and what a wonderful opportunity to teach your kids about where the white gold comes from!
We enjoyed a working dog show, a whip cracking show and learnt all about shearing sheep. You can even take a ride around the 400-acre property on the back of a very well-equipped tractor – loads of fund for all ages.
Oh and if you have overseas family and friends coming to stay, bring them here to hand feed a large variety of native Australia animals; wallabies, emus, roos and koalas included. Just pick up a bag of fed as you buy your ticket on the way in.
For the younger kids, there is an onsite playground area, conveniently located by the café which has a number of outside tables and chairs. The café sells a mix of hot and cold food plus all the good stuff like ice creams, coffee and drinks.
For me, I just can’t go past the authenticity of the place. The staff are so lovely, and so incredibly passionate about the animals – look out for one of the very sweet TAFE placement students who love any excuse to get the babies out for you to cuddle.
The whole place is just so quintessentially Aussie, it’s utterly delicious.
In the warmer summer months, you can even camp on the property! It’s also a really popular place for kids’ parties, christenings and family gatherings.
And finally a perk for parents, if you are a member of Playgroup Australia and hold an ABC card (Australian Baby Card) then you are eligible for a concession ticket. For all other pricing, visit their website
Calmsley Hill City Farm plans to reopen on June 18, 2020.
