Here's the wheely good news you've been waiting for! The super cool, super popular Sydney Park bike track has finally received recognition for being the "wheel deal"... just like our kids have been saying for years.

Taking out the gold medal in the landscape design category at the DRIVENxDESIGN 2020 Sydney Design Awards, the unique inner-city bike track is a creative and innovative feat. Bringing together the needs of the community with the natural surrounds and environmental sustainability, the bike track features twists, turns and challenges that help city kids learn safe, independent riding in an exciting space.

Kids of all ages love the City of Sydney’s award-winning park, while enjoying some active fun in the sun. The community space was designed to offer adventurous and challenging play for both little ones and tweens.

The track features a bike pump and fuel station, traffic light and shop front, as well as hills, bridges and tunnels. Their imaginations will run wild as kids engage in the interactive play elements and navigate the twist and turns of the vibrant landscape.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore praised the beloved recreational spot explaining as an ideal place for kids.

“We have created a fun, engaging and beautiful space for kids to master their riding skills. This track caters for learners just coming off their training wheels and more confident riders ready for a challenge,” she said.

“This adventure-style bike track moves away from the conventional bike track layout and shifts the focus towards play and learning to ride,” added Scott Ibbotson, Project Director at Turf Design who was commissioned by the City and to create the new-look track.

“We’re thrilled that the bike track has become a much-loved asset for the community, and promotes bike riding as a playful, health and sociable experience.”

Kids can also learn new skills in the shaded area of the neighbouring Sydney Park Cycling Centre which runs riding clinics and courses.

Coming along way since its humble beginnings as a brickmaking site and then a rubbish dump, Sydney Park is a treasure trove of family fun with 40 hectares of expansive parklands, walking and riding paths, barbecue facilities and picnic areas, a children’s playground and Sydney City Farm.

An epic new skate park, complete with a skate plaza, beginner bowl and large flow bowl for skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes, is also due to open alongside the bike track later this year, so get ready to roll.
