Lights of Christmas At St Mary's Cathedral Square
- Thu Dec 05 - Wed Dec 25 2019
Sydney’s favourite free Christmas event is celebrating ten years of bringing families, friends and communities together. Lights of Christmas presented by Paynter Dixon and created and produced by AGB Events, will return to St Mary’s Cathedral from Thursday 5 December until Christmas night.
Lights of Christmas is renowned as Sydney’s premier celebration of the festive season, sharing stories of peace, joy and goodwill. As television personality and annual event host Sandra Sully says, “The Christmas season in Sydney doesn’t officially start until the lights are turned on at St Mary’s Cathedral.” As dusk falls at 7.30pm, community choirs will perform, with projections repeating from 8.30pm to 11.00pm. Opening night will include a special performance by internationally acclaimed artists, supported by Australian talent.
Honouring St Mary’s Cathedral, the sound and light experience draws on the principles of religious architecture, by guiding the viewers’ gaze up the 75m high spires of the Cathedral to the heavens. The Cathedral will be transformed through spectacular visual effects, paying homage to the architecture with artistry never before seen in Sydney. This visual masterpiece will be matched by a commissioned soundtrack incorporating vocals from the St Mary’s Cathedral Choir and bold cinematic instrumentation.
The second segment will depict the traditional Christmas story. Set within a gilded proscenium arch, a series of dioramas featuring early Renaissance artwork will re-tell the story upon which the customs and traditions of Christmas are based. The story culminates in a series of Madonna and Child artworks, featuring influential pieces from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Lights of Christmas will again partner with the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation to raise funds for St Vincent’s Hospital’s mental health programs, providing a platform for the public to demonstrate generosity during the Christmas season. Delicious food and beverage options will be available to purchase on-site from 5.00pm, or visitors can pack their own picnic.

The music is horrific and much much too loud and scary for my children, turn the volume down considerably and it might be more tolerable.
