The Incredible 65km Walking Trail From Parramatta To The Blue Mountains

  • Family

Put on your most comfy walking boots! The incredible Great West Walk 65km walking trail linking Parramatta to the Blue Mountains opened in late 2019 for those of you who love long walks in the bush.

It is a community-led initiative by the Walking Volunteers and takes you from Parramatta Park passing through Blacktown, Western Sydney Parklands, Rooty Hill and Wianamatta Regional Park, and Cumberland Plain Woodlands.

The Great West Walk is Western Sydney's longest walk and will take you around 5 days if you do it in its entirety. If the mere thought of that brings blisters to your toes, you can take a leisurely stroll and dip into many of the shorter routes.

You've Done Bondi To Coogee...

“People are already familiar with the Sydney Harbour Walk, Great North Walk and Sydney’s Coastal Walks, and now the Great West Walk will open the door to the lesser-known but equally beautiful bushland corridors, regional parks and waterways of Sydney’s west,” says City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer.

Sydney's Great West Walk has plenty of walking trails for families.

Bring the kids because the terrain is relatively flat, with plenty of toilet stops, and shade (although don't forget the hats and sunscreen). Along the way there are playgrounds to explore, rivers to swim in, historic buildings to discover and Chinese Gardens to meander in. There's also ample opportunity to spot wildlife including kangaroos, emus, and if you're lucky, the endangered regent honeyeater!

Rock And Stroll

If you don't want to go full Forrest Gump we recommend the 1.2km walking track that runs along Toongabbie Creek between Old Windsor Road and Tucks Road, Toongabbie which was created by the City of Parramatta.

“City of Parramatta is proud to have contributed to what is sure to become an iconic walk. It is a wonderful opportunity for people from near and far to come and explore Western Sydney, and provides a great excuse to get outside and be active – whether you choose to walk 1km or the whole 65,” Cr Dwyer said.

In the future there is hope that will be a continuous multi-day track created so that we'll be able to walk from Bondi to Bathurst. These boots were made for walking!
