The Macquarie Ice Rink❜s Future Was On Thin Ice - Has It Been Saved?

  • All Ages

On Friday it was reported that the 39-year-old Macquarie Centre ice-rink was set to be demolished as part of a planned major upgrade to the Macquarie Shopping Centre in early 2020. Its closure was to make way for more access to the railway station and bus interchange.

Cue massive public outcry and a petition on Change.org which gained over 25,000 signatures.

But Wait!

Don't hang up your skates just yet. Sydney Morning Herald reports that AMP Capital has asked the City of Ryde Council to pause the development application after listening to the community.

The managing director of AMP Capital Shopping Centres, Mark Kirkland, said it had listened to the community, customers and retailers.

“We acknowledge the outpouring of support for the ice rink and the special place it has for many,” he said.

Even legendary Olympic gold medallist Steven Bradbury was against the closure, saying it was "sad to see how many sports spaces have been gobbled up due to the ridiculous demand for real estate across Australia".

The rink was a training ground for Bradbury, who won Australia's first winter Olympic gold medal.

Just like Bradbury's classic underdog win, this is a David and Goliath style accomplishment! We are pirouetting with joy. See you on the ice, folks.
