Powerhouse Museum Is Definitely Moving To Parramatta

  • Parents Only

For years now we've hearing about the Powerhouse Museum's move to Parramatta, and it was a huge political pawn for Labor and the Libs in the last election.

But now we know for sure....  start collecting boxes because the Powerhouse is definitely moving to Parramatta. It will begin a staged shutdown from June 2020 with plans to open its new home in 2023.

So, What Now?

The main heritage power station building will close to the public mid-2020 while the Wran Building, the 1980s addition that features the main entrance and touring hall, will remain open for exhibitions for a further 12 months.

The new $500 million museum for the city's west will be known as the Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta and with 18,000 sqm of exhibition and public space, it'll be the largest museum in NSW.

Find it on the banks of the Parramatta River, which will also include a revamped Riverside Theatres connected by an art bridge.

Out Of This World

The Parramatta institution will also be home to NSW’s first major planetarium. It will be over 30m wide with a full dome experience fitted out with ultra-high-resolution 3D video complemented by multi-channel immersive audio, making it the most advanced visualisation environment in Australia.

An artists impression of the new planetarium.

What About The Trains?

Won't somebody think of the trains?! The Boulton and Watt Steam engine and the Locomotive No. 1, which hauled NSW's first train will be moved to Castle Hill's Discovery Centre, with the remainder housed at Parramatta.

It has been suggested that a new Broadway-style theatre and fashion and design museum will be built in Ultimo to replace the Powerhouse. Oooh start spreading the news....
