Green Caffeen: The New Rent-a-Cup Coffee Scheme

  • Parents Only

Started by two stay-at-home dads who wanted to do their bit to improve their environmental impact, Green Caffeen offer reusable coffee cups with a difference. Rather than buying the cup and having to cart it around with you all day, this new app allows you to “rent” your reusable cup for free and return it dirty to the same cafe or another cafe that is taking part in Green Caffeen. This is especially great for people on the go that treat themselves to more than one coffee a day.

The service is completely free to use as long as you return your cup within 30 days — otherwise, a $12.99 charge applies for replacing the cup. You can scan out up to two cups at a time on your app, and according to the Green Caffeen website, there are already 2,160 Australians using the rent-a-cup app and 32,811 coffees have been served in a Green Caffeen cup.

Where can I rent a Green Caffeen cup?

So far Green Caffeen is available in 180 cafes throughout Australia. Located as far north as Windsor and as far south as Wollongong and Jervis Bay — Sydneysiders are spoilt for choice when it comes to cafes taking part in Green Caffeen's rent-a-cup scheme. Cafes include Royale Speciality in Surry Hills, The Roast Office in Manly and Infusion on Clarance in Wynyard. A bunch of inner west cafes have come on board too, including such as Ona, both Cornersmiths, Cherry Moon, Two Chaps and Petty Cash.

In Victoria, you are limited to four options: Mikro Coffee Roasters in Torquay, Bike Rack Cafe in Ballarat, and Belly Bowls and Feast in Geelong. Other Green Caffeen locations include Adelaide, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Perth and Alice Springs.

The program officially launches on July 30, and some cafes will give away free coffee that day to celebrate. All you need to do is download the Green Caffeen app (Android users, click here). Happy caffeen-ating!
