Digital Drivers Licenses Are Now Being Trialled In Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs

  • Parents Only

After a successful three-month trial in Dubbo, where participants used their digital driver licence – accessible on their mobile phone – as proof of identity and age when entering pubs and clubs and in roadside police checks, the trial is now being rolled out across Sydney’s Eastern beaches, with eligible drivers in postcodes 2022, 2024, 2026, 2031 and 2034 now able to register for a digital driver licence.

Note: if you decide to participate in the trial, you’ll still need to carry your physical driver licence for the duration. You don’t wanna get caught short!

Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello said a statewide rollout is expected this year on an opt-in basis, following feedback on this trial.

He says that “Smartphones have become de facto wallets and we’re using cutting edge technology so that drivers can use a digital licence in everyday scenarios…The digital driver licence is hosted securely on the new Service NSW app, locks with a PIN and can be accessed offline. It will provide additional levels of security and protection against identity fraud, compared to the plastic driver licence.” So 21st century!

Joining the trial is completely voluntary—so only enter if you’re up for it. Participants will be able to make important contributions on the effectiveness of the digital licence by providing feedback. All you need to do in order to set up an account is create a MyServiceNSW Account, download the Service NSW mobile app and opt-in for the digital driver licence. Easy as pie!
