If you've got a teenager tackling the HSC in the next few years, you already know it's not just students who feel the pressure. From navigating subject choices and study schedules to managing stress levels and looming exams, the HSC can be a challenging time for the whole family.

That's why we're loving the support on offer through Blacktown City Libraries' HSC Support Zone. They've created a growing ecosystem of lectures, workshops, study spaces and online resources designed to help students - and their parents - survive and thrive during the HSC period.

Helping Families Survive The HSC: Blacktown City Library's Free Support for Students and Parents

Let's be honest, the HSC can feel a bit like a family group project - and one that you probably didn’t volunteer for. One minute your child is choosing their Year 11 subjects, and the next your dining table has disappeared under a mountain of paper, textbooks and scribbled post-it notes. It can be hard to know how best to support your teen without becoming their unofficial project manager.

That's where Blacktown City Libraries is stepping in. Through its HSC Support Zone, the library service is providing a range of free and affordable resources to help local students stay organised, build confidence and prepare for their exams, as well as a safe and stress-free space to study for when the family dining table becomes too hectic.

We love that it’s helping us parents feel like they're not navigating the HSC journey alone.

Here’s how Blacktown City Council is supporting parents and their teens through the high school home-stretch.

HSC Lectures and Workshops Designed for Success

One of the standout features of the HSC Support Zone is its program of lectures and workshops throughout the year.

These sessions are designed to help students strengthen their subject knowledge, improve exam techniques and gain practical study skills from experienced presenters. Some are HSC markers themselves, so they know their stuff!

There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on private tutors - your local Blacktown library has you covered.

A Study Space Away From Home

If you've ever walked into your teenager's bedroom and discovered they are somehow "studying" while simultaneously watching TikTok, messaging friends and listening to music, you'll appreciate this one.

Blacktown City Libraries offers dedicated study spaces where students can focus away from household distractions. Sometimes simply having a quiet place to work alongside other motivated students can make a huge difference.

Online Resources for Every HSC Subject

Students can access a huge range of online resources covering HSC subjects, including English, Mathematics, Sciences, History, Business Studies, Legal Studies, PDHPE and more. Resources include research databases, study guides, reference materials and subject-specific learning tools that can be accessed with a library membership.

Who knew all this support was available through a local library?

Help Beyond the Textbooks

One thing we particularly like about the HSC Support Zone is that it recognises that success isn't just about cramming content.

Students can also access study support tools, homework help services and online tutoring platforms that help build confidence, improve organisation and strengthen independent learning skills.

The HSC Support Zone also recognises the importance of wellbeing during the exam years, which we know is critical to their overall success. Students can access workshops focused on managing stress (in partnership with headspace), building resilience and reducing exam anxiety.

Because sometimes the biggest challenge is knowing how to manage the workload and dealing with the bumps along the road.

Why Parents Love It Too

While the HSC Support Zone is aimed at students, many parents appreciate having trusted resources and structured support available outside of school. Are you feeling the pressure of being the unofficial cheerleader at home? The HSC Support Zone can take some of the heat off you, too.

If you're reading this, chances are you're already doing a lot behind the scenes - offering encouragement, helping keep things organised and supporting your teen through the ups and downs of high school. However, the HSC Support Zone is a reminder that families don't have to tackle the HSC alone. Blacktown City Council is here to help you navigate one of the biggest milestones of the school years.
