Living in Sydney's north-west often feels like you're competing with thousands of other families for the same patch of grass on a Saturday morning. New housing estates seem to expand overnight, but the parks don't always keep up. That's why the arrival of Ken Birdsey Park in Schofields has got us pumped.

This isn't just another neighbourhood playground - it's a sprawling 20-hectare recreation precinct with a giant adventure playground, sporting fields, fitness zones, picnic areas and kilometres of pathways. Some locals are already referring to this mega park as their ‘second backyard’.

Opening in 2026, Ken Birdsey Park has been years in the making, and we’re here to tell you what to expect come open day!

Ken Birdsey Park Schofields: A New Mega Park for Sydney's North-West

Located in one of Sydney's fastest-growing regions, Ken Birdsey Park has been designed to cater to everyone from toddlers and teens to sporty families, walkers and nature lovers. The enormous open green space is expected to become a central gathering place for local families.

Right now, Blacktown City Council are putting the finishing touches on this spectacular recreational mega park, and we cannot wait to see it in action.

A Huge Adventure Playground for Kids

One of the biggest drawcards for families will be the sprawling 2,500-square-metre adventure playground.

According to Blacktown City Council, the playground will include a variety of exciting features designed to encourage active play and exploration, including:

  • Nature play trails
  • Giant pipe slides
  • ‘Little diggers’ sand play areas
  • Trampolines
  • Timber climbing structures
  • Swings and balance challenges

The playground has been designed to cater to children of different ages and abilities, and we just know it’s going to be one of those destination play spaces that the kids will be begging to return to again and again.

Sports Fields for the Growing Community Ken Birdsey Park
Green spaces as far as the eye can see at Ken Birdsey Park.

Sports Fields for the Growing Community

Start cutting up those oranges, because these sporting facilities are going to pop!

Ken Birdsey Park will feature:

  • Four soccer fields
  • Two cricket ovals
  • Multi-purpose recreation spaces
  • Supporting amenities for community sport

Fresh turf has recently been laid across the sporting fields, and we can almost smell the sausages sizzling on a crisp Saturday morning.

Walking, Cycling and Outdoor Fitness

For those families who enjoy being active, the park is guaranteed to get those daily steps up.

A 2.6-kilometre shared pathway will wind throughout the precinct, providing a safe and scenic route for:

  • Walking
  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Scootering
  • Skateboarding

And who needs a gym membership when Ken Birdsey Park will also feature an outdoor fitness zone equipped with exercise stations, giving locals a FREE way to stay active all year round.

Picnic Areas, Community Facilities and a Clever Eco Pavilion

Ken Birdsey Park isn't just about sport and play. The new precinct includes a modern pavilion complete with community facilities and spaces to connect with like-minded families.

Set amongst sprawling green space, the facilities are the perfect destination for birthday parties, family picnics and weekend catch-ups.

And, because we know Western Sydney summers can be intense, Blacktown City Council teamed up with Sam Crawford Architects to design a climate-smart amenities pavilion built from recycled construction rubble. Rainwater trickles down through the rubble, creating a natural evaporative cooling effect when the wind blows through it. Pretty cool!

Facing east to protect you from the fierce afternoon glare, this natural-looking pavilion includes:

  • A fully equipped canteen for post-match treats.
  • A community/club room.
  • Covered outdoor picnic areas with barbecues and tables.
  • Baby-change rooms and public accessible restrooms.

Restoring Nature Along First Ponds Creek

We also love that a big part of this project has focused on eco-friendly restoration.

Blacktown City Council has been rehabilitating sections of First Ponds Creek and surrounding conservation areas, so you can expect a more attractive and natural landscape that helps protect local ecosystems.
