A white Christmas is nothing compared to a toasty warm Christmas in the city down under, especially when its streets are sprinkled with lights and the beautiful harmonies of angelic choirs. There’s no shortage of Christmas concerts and places to hear carols in Sydney.
Check out our picks of the best for families:
1. Coogee Carols
A beachside Christmas celebration, Coogee Carols will be held at Goldstein Reserve, Coogee Beach from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Sunday 16 December. Locally based celebrities and personalities volunteer their time to appear at the Coogee Carols, performing traditional and contemporary carols, supported by a live band, and of course, Santa! Large Screens are placed at Goldstein Reserve to ensure that everyone can see the performances. More info here.
2. Carols In The Domain
Going into its 36th year, Woolworths Carols in the Domain is Australia's largest FREE Christmas concert! With performances from a variety of artists (this year's lineup includes Mickey Mouse and Samantha Jade), choose from a concert on Friday 21 December from 7pm-10pm, or Saturday 22 December at 7.45pm (with the Christmas Carnival kicking off from 12pm on 22 December). If the concert is past your little one's bedtime, you can watch it on Channel 7 from 8pm. More info here.
3. Carols Under The Bridge, Kirribilli
Imagine singing Jingle Bells with the glistening harbour in view! Hosted by Kirribilli’s Church By The Bridge, this is a carolling affair like no other. Under the Harbour Bridge the festivities start at 5pm with a Christmas Jazz performance followed by carols from 7pm – 9pm. For the kids there will be face painting, craft and games, a special live nativity scene including camels, sheep and a donkey. You can even have a Christmas photo taken with the animals against the beautiful Sydney Harbour backdrop. Held on 15 December. More info here.
4. Carols In The Park, Five Dock
Carols in the Park will be held on Monday 17 December at Halliday Park. Save the date for an evening of carols, children activities, entertainment and Christmas cheer with your family and friends. Kicks off 6pm, with carols beginning at 7.30pm. More info here.
5. Sydney Christmas Children's Concert
Pack your picnic rug and get in early for the best view of this FREE concert at Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills on Saturday 1 December...hosted by Jimmy Giggle! Running from 6.30pm-8.30pm, children's favourites Justine Clarke, Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom, SplashDance, The Listies and more will be performing, and there'll be craft activities, and Christmas elves to and play table tennis and giant Jenga with! Look out for Santa, and if it's not too past your bedtime, stay for the fireworks which will be wrapping up the evening. Jam-packed Chrissy stocking will be available for $5, with all proceeds going to Variety – The Children’s Charity. More info here.
6. The Magic Of Christmas At The Concourse
Celebrate the magic of Christmas at this enchanting concert for the whole family on Sunday 9 December 2018! Led by renowned conductor, Simon Thew experience the full glory of the Willoughby Symphony and special guest soloist perform all your favourite carols in a memorable festive celebration for the young and young at heart. 2pm start. 7. Alexandria Village Christmas Concert
Come Friday night 28 December 2018, experience the magic of Christmas at this FREE family-friendly concert, complete with a visit from Santa. Hosted by The Listies and featuring children’s favourites the Bunny Rackets, Ally Boom Boom & The Cool Bananas, SplashDance and Hot Potato Band. Kids will enjoy the craft activities, and can play table tennis and games with the Christmas elves. Santa stockings jam-packed with goodies will be on sale for $5, with all proceeds going to Variety - The Children's Charity. More info here.
8. Carols By The Sea
Sing to your heart's delight, bring a rug to sit on and welcome in the festive season at Carols by the Sea at South Bondi Park on Wednesday 12 December 2018. Running from 4.30pm-8pm, this merry FREE annual event brings the community together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. With children's entertainment, Christmas tunes, dance performances and carol singing (including by Bondi Beach Public School Choir), it promises to be a fun night for everyone! More info here.
9. The Lights of Christmas At St Mary’s Cathedral
St Mary’s Cathedral will again be the star of Sydney’s public Christmas celebrations, with the Lights of Christmas returning to capture the imagination of audiences with a spectacular light and sound show. From 5 December up until (and including) Christmas Day, there will be carols at 7.30pm each evening to kick off the show. More info here.
10. Choirs In The City: Pitt St Mall
Fitting tunes to power you through your Chrissy shopping! Every Thursday (6-8pm), Saturday (6-7pm) and Sunday night (6-7pm) from 25 November through to 23 December, Christmas carols will enchant Pitt Street Mall. The choir lineup includes The Jingle Belles Singers, The Children's Charity Choir, and the Australian Youth Choir. More info here.
11. Choirs In The City: Martin Place
From the 24 December through to Christmas Eve, a countless number of choirs will be taking turns to singcarols under the branches of the magnificent Martin Place Christmas tree. The lineup includes The Australian Girls Choir, Gardeners Road Public School, Sydney Philharmonia and The Salvation Army Band and Choir. More info here.
12. Strathfield Christmas Carols
Strathfield Council are inviting local residents and visitors to the official Bressington Park opening on Saturday 8 December 2018 (5-8pm), kicking off with Strathfield Christmas Carols! There'll also be children's entertainment, yummy food stalls and a faux ice skating rink. Make sure to stay for the family Christmas movie and the fireworks finale! More information here.
13. Carols By Candelight
Just because this epic annual Christmas Eve concert and Vision Australia fundraiser is in Melbourne doesn't mean you have to miss out! Presented by David Campbell and Sonia Kruger, Channel 9 will be airing Carols By Candelight Carols live from 8pm, and replaying the concert on Christmas Day (check your TV Guide for replay air times). Why not have a Chrissy picnic with the kids on your lounge room floor, sit back and enjoy the concert from your telly? Sure beats the crowd of 10,000 people! More info here.
14. Carols In The Park, Wiley Park
Pack a picnic and head to the Wiley Park Amphitheatre from 6pm on Sunday 2 December for a FREE night of festive entertainment - hosted by old Playschool favourite, Monica Trapaga. On top of the carols there'll be glitter tattoos, face painting, a guest appearance by Santa and a fireworks finale. More info here.
15. Christmas Carols At Bressington Park, Homebush
On Saturday 8 December 2018 from 5pm, Strathfield Council will officially openBressington Park with Christmas carols! There'll also be community singing and musical performances, kids' entertainment, yummy food stalls, a family Christmas movie, and fireworks! More info here.
16. Carols In The Crescent At Parramatta Park With Guy Sebastian
Hosted by Guy and Jules Sebastian, this FREE community event on 15 December will feature some of the finest voices in the country, belting out all-time favourite festive songs to raise funds for The Sebastian Foundation. Don’t miss Santa, the Christmas Grinch, kids’ rides and all the food stalls. A family-friendly start-time of 6.30pm (through to 8.30pm). More info here.
17. Carols On The Green, Annandale
Carols with some Inner West flavour! One for the adults/bigger kids on Sunday 23 December from 7pm, sit back to a mix of contemporary and traditional carols in an Inner West flavour at this FREE concert hosted by Village Church. More info here.
