A Massive New Green Space Has Opened For Sydney Families

Did you hear the news that a huge new patch of green is opening up in Sydney? 20 impressive hectares to be exact! Moore Park South is officially open to the community, and there's plenty more in the pipeline.

The transformation is turning 20 hectares of the former Moore Park Golf Course into public parkland, and while the finished version is still a couple of years away, the first stage is already open for picnics, walks, dog adventures and a bit of breathing room, surprisingly close to the CBD.

And this weekend, Sydney is throwing a little party to celebrate those fences finally coming down.

What is the Moore Park South Project?

Moore Park South sits between Moore Park, Redfern, Waterloo and Kensington and is being transformed as part of a $50-million NSW Government project.

The idea is to give the rapidly growing neighbourhoods surrounding Moore Park more everyday green space, particularly as apartment living continues to boom around areas such as Green Square and Waterloo. Greater Sydney Parklands estimates around 690,000 people currently live within five kilometres of the new park.

For decades, much of this patch of Moore Park has sat behind golf-course fencing. Those fences are now disappearing, opening the landscape up for walking, picnicking and recreation while a smaller revamped golf precinct takes shape alongside it.

What Can Families Explore Now?

This isn't a case of waiting until 2028 to visit. The first sections opened in July 2026 and there's already plenty of space to stretch the legs.

Visitors can currently use picnic areas, tables and bench seating, toilets, and a temporary fenced-off off-leash dog area. Food and drinks are also available around Golf House, while a coffee van is scheduled to pop up from 7 am to 10 am daily during August 2026.

Regular activities are also beginning to settle into the new park, including the Toll House Run Club and community wellness programs.

Families can currently enter from Dacey Avenue and South Dowling Street, with the new Reschs Bridge connection providing another handy link from Redfern. Access arrangements may shift as construction continues, so keep an eye on onsite signs when visiting.

The Official Moore Park South Opening Weekend

The parkland may already be accessible, but Sunday, 23 August 2026 is the official community celebration.

From 12 pm to 2 pm, families can come along for free coffee and gelato, live music and roving performers while checking out Sydney's newest public parkland. Entry is completely FREE.

The New Nature Playground is Still to Come

Now for the bit families will probably be watching most closely: a brand-new nature playground is part of the final Moore Park South plans.

Artist impressions show a play area set within the surrounding landscape, with sand play and a more natural, bush-inspired feel rather than a brightly coloured traditional playground.

The playground isn't open yet, though. It forms part of the larger Moore Park South transformation scheduled for completion in 2028, so consider this weekend's opening the first chapter rather than the finished product.

There's Plenty More on the Horizon

By the time the full transformation is finished, Moore Park South is set to look very different.

Plans include new walking, running and cycling paths, a full-size community sports field, multi-purpose sports courts and outdoor fitness equipment, along with more natural parkland, picnic areas, seating and improved facilities. Landscaping will also focus on creating better habitat for local wildlife.

For families, that means Moore Park South will eventually offer a mix of playground time, bike rides, casual sport and sprawling lawns without having to venture far from inner Sydney.

Golf Isn't Disappearing Either

Golfers aren't being shown the gate completely.

A new 12-hole public golf course is being created beside the public park, with plans for an expanded driving range featuring up to 90 bays, an 18-hole mini-golf course, plus putting and chipping greens. The new golf course is expected to be completed in 2027, with golf continuing throughout construction.

So, between a huge new public park, a nature playground, mini golf and new sporting spaces, Moore Park South is shaping up to become a pretty impressive addition to Sydney's family-friendly outdoor line-up.
