Dawn Fraser Baths in Balmain is a wonderful swimming spot for Sydney families who want something a bit different from a regular pool.

Dive Into History at Dawn Fraser Baths, Balmain

This heritage-listed tidal harbour pool sits on Sydney Harbour and offers a unique place to swim, splash, and relax, with views across the water and plenty of space around the decking and the grassy park nearby.

What Makes Dawn Fraser Baths Special?

What makes Dawn Fraser Baths truly special is the rare mix of history, community and harbour-side swimming all in one spot.

Named after Dawn Fraser, one of Australia's most celebrated swimmers and a three-time Olympic gold medallist, this heritage-listed tidal pool has been part of Sydney life for over a century, offering families the chance to swim in calm harbour waters rather than a standard chlorinated pool. The natural tidal flow means the water changes with the harbour, creating a relaxed, back-to-basics swimming experience that feels closely connected to the environment. Add in the iconic location, affordable entry, and the way generations of locals have learned to swim here, and it's easy to see why Dawn Fraser Baths feels less like a pool and more like a treasured piece of Sydney's outdoor culture.

Facilities

The baths feature a large 50-metre swimming area where kids and adults can swim casually or watch local water polo and club activities. At low tide, a small sandy beach appears, where younger children can play safely in shallower water.

There are change rooms, showers and basic amenities on site, and a small kiosk has refreshments, making it easy to turn a swim into a full family outing.
