Atmospheric Memory: An Immersive New Experience at the Powerhouse Ultimo

A breathtaking, immersive installation is set to delight your senses at the fascinating Powerhouse Ultimo museum - and this exhibition is one not to be missed!

Taking residence for almost three months at Sydney's iconic science museum, the exciting Atmospheric Memory space encourages visitors to interact with artworks in an environment filled with light, sound and breathtaking projections.

Inspired by computing pioneer Charles Babbage’s idea that the air is a ‘vast library’ of every word ever spoken, media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s immersive creation invites audiences into a multisensory world at the intersection of art and science, bringing the memories and voices of the past to life.

Walk through the chambers of Atmospheric Memory and engage with 18 interactive artworks designed to 'make the atmosphere tangible so it’s no longer seen as something neutral or invisible we take for granted'.

This live art show combines historical artifacts with cutting-edge technologies from AI, robotics, endoscopy and fluid dynamics to nanotechnology, mapping and 3D printing, to explore what the atmosphere around us is trying to tell us.

Touch the world's first 3D-printed speech bubble, see your voice travel in a ripple tank and walk through clouds of text written in mid-air! Hear 3,000 speakers each with its own field recording and interact with virtual environments, all within the realm of a monumental 360-degree projection chamber.

The Atmospheric Memory environment is suitable for all ages however it is recommended for children 8+. 

Relaxed Sessions are available and open to everyone, providing a reduced sensory, exhibition experience for people with autism and sensory sensitivities. 

Atmospheric Memory includes bright lights, strobe, low light, loud noise, haze and smoke.
