Luna: A Journey to The Moon

Houston, we have a new immersive experience! Sydney families will soon be able to swap Earth for the Moon without travelling quite as far as NASA.

LUNA: A Journey to the Moon is bringing its immersive virtual reality adventure to Sydney Olympic Park from September 2026, sending visitors straight into the story of Apollo 11. From astronaut training and the thunderous launch of Saturn V to floating through space and setting foot on the lunar surface, this is a history lesson with considerably more wow factor.

What is LUNA: A Journey to the Moon?

What to expect at LUNA: Journey to the Moon.

LUNA is a free-roaming virtual reality experience inspired by the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing.

Once the headset goes on, visitors become part of the mission, moving freely through a detailed virtual world rather than simply watching the action from the sidelines. The experience uses real NASA archive material and authentic mission-control audio to recreate some of the biggest moments in space exploration.

You'll train like an astronaut, experience the launch of the Saturn V rocket, travel through space and eventually find yourself wandering across the Sea of Tranquillity, following in the footsteps of Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 crew.

Space-mad kids may need some convincing that they haven't actually left Sydney.

The big drawcard here is the sense of actually being inside the mission.

LUNA combines virtual reality, cinematic visuals, interactive elements and original audio recordings to take visitors from Earth to the Moon. You can hear mission-control chatter and astronaut communications along the way while learning more about the preparation and technology behind Apollo 11.

The main VR experience runs for around 40 minutes, but families should allow roughly an hour for the full visit, including check-in, storing belongings, completing the waiver, and getting fitted with the equipment. We recommend arriving about 15 minutes before your booked session.

Is LUNA Suitable for Kids?

This one is aimed at older kids and teenagers, with a minimum age of 10 and a minimum height requirement of 1.3 metres.

Because you'll be standing and moving through the virtual environment, comfy clothes and sensible shoes are a good idea. Hats and caps aren't suitable under VR headsets, and bags must be stored in the lockers provided before your mission begins.

If your child is prone to motion sickness, vertigo or claustrophobia, it's also worth bearing in mind that VR experiences can cause discomfort for some visitors.
