Sydney will be a hive of activity over the summer school holidays as art lovers of all ages are invited to explore the inspiring world of art, nature and play at the new Hive Festival. The FREE family event will be abuzz with interactive artworks, hands-on workshops, performances, storytelling and more.

Hive Festival will take over the Art Gallery of New South Wales on Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 January 2024 and The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre on Friday 19 & Saturday 20 January 2024.

What's On At Hive Festival

A centrepiece of the festival is Be at the Hive - a new collaborative artwork designed by Noa Haim, director of Collective Paper Aesthetics, Rotterdam. Throughout January, Art Gallery visitors can contribute hexagonal cardboard prisms to a growing ‘beehive’, culminating in the assembly of giant hive-like structures in the North Building over the festival weekend. The structures will be adorned with affirmations, translated into Braille, and scratch-and-sniff scent, a first for any project created by Noa Haim, to create an immersive sensory experience for everyone to enjoy.

Trains by The Kids – an app-based audio ‘train journey’ across Sydney revealing exciting sounds and stories - will also premiere at Hive Festival.

There will also be hands-on experiences at the Art Gallery throughout the Festival including:

  • Embodied Art Tours by performance artist Emma May Gibson
  • A Living Family Album Workshop presented by We Are Studios
  • MPower Generator - a physical obstacle course by artists Latai Taumoepeau and Paris Taia
  • A Body Percussion Workshop with Lucky Lartey and Friends
  • Your Presence Is A Gift Workshop by Nicole Barakat
  • Learn To Make Pickled Vegetables with artist Marian Abboud and the Seed of Hope Collective
  • Practice the art of poetry with the Master Storytellers from the creative writing centre The Story Factory.

The children's activity space Point and Line to Plane, created by artist Desmond Lazaro in the Art Gallery's major Kandinsky exhibition, will also be open daily in the South Building from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free for children under 12 who are accompanied by an adult Kandinsky ticketholder.

Hive Festival is part of Sydney Festival 2024 and is created in partnership with the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Blacktown Arts in collaboration with creative producer Claudia Chidiac.
