The Australian Chamber Orchestra has announced the much-anticipated return of its acclaimed children’s production, There’s a Sea in My Bedroom, an immersive production with live music, based on the classic picture book by Margaret Wild.

Just in time for the spring school holidays, the ACO presents a captivating production of There’s a Sea in My Bedroom at the Orchestra’s state-of-the-art home at Pier 2/3 in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, as a part of the exciting ACO Family programs for 2024.

Adapted and directed by Tim McGarry, this theatrical performance weaves together captivating storytelling with an original score from Australian composer Paul Stanhope, performed live by an ACO string quintet. This enchanting production, perfect for young audiences, will bring moments of magic and laughter to the whole family.

Based on the beloved 1984 children’s book written by award-winning author Margaret Wild and illustrated by Jane Tanner, There’s a Sea in My Bedroom captures the magic of a child’s fantasy world.

Audiences will be transported through music, movement and lighting into the vivid imagination of Davey, a young boy who faces his fear of the ocean when, upon bringing home a seashell from the beach, he coaxes the water trapped inside to come out with the words: “Come out, sea, come out. I won't hurt you.” As the water fills his bedroom, Davey’s fear turns to joy as he plays amongst the imaginary waves and sea life.

Designed for little theatre lovers 2 - 8 years old, the show runs for 40 mins including a post-show ‘meet the musicians’ session. Children can also enjoy free creative play activities before and after the performance, while parents enjoy the magnificent harbour views from the foyer spaces.
