Joy Is An Explosion of Creativity and Colour

Joy Melbourne
'Joy' Exhibition at the Immigration Museum

Picture this: Seven leading Victorian creatives have unleashed their talent to craft installations that are nothing short of emotional fireworks. ‘Joy’ is an adventure through creativity, colour, and storytelling that promises to whisk you away on a journey of transformation.

From the carefree bliss of childhood to the warm fuzzies of belonging and togetherness, ‘Joy’ captures it all. And it’s not just a feast for the eyes; it’s an invitation to explore what joy means to you personally. Fancy sharing a slice of your joy? The ‘Share Your Joy’ wall is all ears (or eyes, really).

The line-up of artists reads like a who’s who of the Victorian art scene:

  • Nadia Hernández serves up joy with a side of daily life, music, and food through vibrant cut-out vignettes.
  • Spencer Harrison transforms the museum into a runway of colour and light, celebrating identity with every strut.
  • Nixi Killick cranks the joy dial to eleven with an interactive, colour-blasting joy generator.
  • Elyas Alavi and Sher Ali delve into epic Persian mythology, connecting resilience, strength, and joy in their compelling mural and neon work.
  • Callum Preston takes a nostalgia trip to a 1990s video store, reminding us of the simple joys we didn’t know we’d miss.
  • Jazz Money envelops us in a soundscape of laughter and care, painting a mural that echoes the laughter of waterfalls.
  • Beci Orpin invites you to hug it out with Bunny Dearest, a giant soft-toy rabbit that screams childlike joy.

Worried about accessibility? Don’t be. The Immigration Museum has got you covered with support for all access requirements including prams.

Just a heads-up, though: some parts of ‘Joy’ feature reflective flooring that might challenge visitors with low vision.

‘Joy’ is a heartfelt thanks to the museum’s generous supporters and partners, who’ve made this explosion of happiness possible.
