Sydney's closest wine region, the Hunter - famed for its gorgeous landscapes, stunning drives, picturesque golden hours and, of course, delicious varieties of wine - is home to an array of kid-friendly wineries that will fulfil all of your weekend-away ideas.

Here are eight of our favourite kid-friendly wineries in the Hunter Valley.

1. Elbourne Wines

Elbourne Wines is a boutique, family-run winery renowned for its Chardonnay and Shiraz varietals. Wine tastings are strictly held by appointment only at the vineyard and are conducted by the owner/grower to give an entirely authentic Elbourne experience.

Many visitors (particularly those not of legal drinking age!) also enjoy visiting the vineyard's collection of farmyard animals, including Wessex Saddleback pigs, Black Suffolk sheep, horses and ducks. The owners also generously allow visiting smalls to play on their children's play equipment, making it the epitome of Hunter Valley wineries you can visit with the kids.

2. Briar Ridge Vineyard

Not only is Briar Ridge Vineyard kid-friendly, but it's also pet-friendly - meaning there will often be distractions for your children in the shape of the Briar Ridge staff's dogs!

There are plenty of outdoor areas that are perfect for bringing a ball or playing lawn games and whiling away the afternoon whilst the adults sip the boutique collection of wines. There's also colouring in!

If the wine and the child-friendly attitude weren't enough to persuade you to visit, the delicious cheese and antipasto platters are likely to sway you.

One of the region's original wine families, with over four generations behind the iconic vineyard, Tulloch Wines have been crafting incredible wines for over 125 years. They offer hands-on cellar door experiences to delight your senses, including their signature Wine Tasting, Wine Tasting paired with local handmade chocolates and a Mystery Wine Tasting Experience with local cheese and charcuterie.

While you indulge in your sampling adventure, little connoisseurs can revel in a specially prepared Junior Tasting Experience with four different soft drinks and four matching snacks or a Teens Kombucha Tasting with a selection of Mailer McGuire specialty Kombucha paired with a local cheese box.

Nestled in Pokolbin and stretching across the foothills of the majestic Brokenback Mountain range, Ivanhoe Wines is a patchwork quilt of vineyards and has become one of the most popular kid-friendly wineries in the Hunter Valley.

Famed for their Shiraz and Semillon but offering a host of other varieties that are just as impressive, Ivanhoe is the ideal winery to spend an afternoon with family and friends.

There's colouring in and lots of space for the little ones, and they'll love playing frisbee or ballgames on the lawn (just remember to bring your own!), while parents enjoy a glass of wine or two at the Cellar Door.

5. Vines Restaurant at Hollydene

The ideal spot for a long lunch with friends and family, Vines Restaurant at Hollydene has a dedicated kids' menu that boasts all of the kids' favourites, as well as a large, lush lawn to play on and a huge toy box that they'll love diving into!

For the adults, there's an extensive gourmet menu that will delight even the fussiest of eaters, alongside stunning surroundings that make for a fun, family day out.

The Drayton family is one of the oldest wine families in Australia, and this expertise is heavily showcased in the Drayton Family Wines Cellar Door offering.

While the grown-ups sip their way through some stunning glasses of the Hunter's finest, kids will adore spending some time in the shaded grassy areas out the front of the winery. Now that's our kind of kid-friendly winery in the Hunter Valley!

7. Saddler's Creek

Their Pokolbin Cellar Door is open seven days for their Premium Wine Tasting Experience with kids' tasting paddles available, too! Plus, weekends are a hive of family fun at the winery with live music and a local food truck serving delicious stone-baked pizzas in the lush outdoor lawn area.
