Kid-Friendly Vineyards In The Hunter Valley
While wine, cheese and a weekend away with your friends might sound like your idea of heaven, you’re probably thinking that it isn’t remotely realistic thanks to the small people in your family that would consider a winery trip to be complete and utter hell.
Well, now you can combine the two! Sydney’s closest wine region, the Hunter Valley—famed for its gorgeous landscapes, stunning drives, picturesque golden hours and of course, delicious varieties of wine, is home to an array of kid-friendly wineries that will fulfil all of your weekend-away ideals.
Here’s where to check out on a family-friendly trip to the Hunter.
Elbourne Wines is a boutique, family-run vineyard that is renowned for its Chardonnay and Shiraz varietals. Wine tastings are strictly held by appointment only at the vineyard and are conducted by the owner/grower to give an entirely authentic Elbourne experience.
Many visitors (particularly those not of legal drinking age!) also enjoy visiting the vineyard’s collection of farmyard animals; including Wessex Saddleback pigs, Black Suffolk sheep, horses and ducks. The owners also generously allow visiting smalls to play on their children's play equipment—making it the epitome of a family-friendly wine tasting experience.
Briar Ridge Vineyard
Not only is it kid-friendly, but it’s also pet-friendly—meaning there will often be distractions for your children in the shape of the Briar Ridge staff’s dogs. There are plenty of outdoor areas that are perfect for bringing a ball along and whiling away the afternoon whilst the adults sip the boutique collection of wines—or playing lawn games and doing some colouring in.
And if the wine and the child-friendly attitude weren’t enough to persuade you to visit, the delicious cheese and antipasto platters are likely to sway you!
Nestled in Pokolbin, and stretching across the foothills of the majestic Brokenback Mountain range, the Ivanhoe Estate is a patchwork quilt of vineyards and has become one of the most popular vineyards in the Hunter Valley. Famed for their Shiraz and Semillon but offering a host of other varieties that are just as impressive, Ivanhoe is the ideal spot to spend an afternoon with family and friends.
There’s colouring in and lots of space for the little ones, and they’ll love playing frisbee or other ballgames on the lawn (just remember to bring your own!), while parents enjoy a glass of wine or two at the Cellar Door.
Vines Restaurant At Hollydene
The ideal spot for a long lunch with friends and family, Vines Restaurant at Hollydene has a dedicated kids menu that boasts all of the kids’ favourites, as well as a large, lush lawn to play on and a huge toy box that they’ll love diving into!
For the adults, there’s an extensive gourmet menu that will delight even the fussiest of eaters, alongside stunning surrounds that make for a fun, family day out.
Drayton’s Family Wines
The Drayton family is one of the oldest wine families in Australia, and this expertise is heavily showcased in the Drayton Family Wines Cellar Door offering. While the grown-ups sip their way through some stunning glasses of the Hunter’s finest, kids will adore spending some time in the shaded grassy areas out the front of the winery.

Get the kids involved with your trip to the vines by taking a winery tour via bikes. Companies like Grapemobile offer accompanying BMX’s, tag-along Trail-a-Bikes and baby seats for the little ones in attendance!
While it’s not a winery—it’s well worth a mention for all of its kid-friendly attributes. Harrigans Irish Pub is complete with a swimming pool, family-friendly accommodation and an extensive amount of food choice for young ones, so if you’re booking a weekend away in the Hunter, Harrigans is an excellent place to base yourselves for your stay.
