BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort Gets Major Upgrade

A towering three-slide water slide complex, swim-up bar and lagoon-style pool precinct are set to transform one of North Queensland's most popular family holiday parks.

Whitsunday Regional Council has approved a major recreation precinct expansion at BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort in Cannonvale, with planning documents describing the project as delivering "a larger, more modern waterpark and improved recreational spaces" for guests.

BIG4 Whitsunday's New Waterslide and Pool Precinct Approved

Drawings submitted with the application show the new water slide tower will rise almost 15 metres above ground level, roughly the height of a four-storey building, with three slides feeding into a new lagoon-style pool precinct. A pool pavilion will house a cafe, kitchen, swim-up bar and kids' activities room, while a large outdoor cinema will form part of the broader recreation and entertainment hub.

The new precinct will be built alongside the resort's existing waterpark and lagoon pool, replacing an area currently occupied by a playground, tennis court and open recreation space. Artist impressions show the lagoon-style pool surrounded by cabanas, bridges and shaded seating areas, designed to create a resort-style zone for guests.

Backed by State Government Funding

The upgrade is supported by $3 million from the Queensland Government's Tourism Icons Investment Fund, matched by a further $11 million in private investment from BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort.

Alongside the water slide tower and pool precinct, the broader project includes 10 new three-bedroom holiday cabins and a purpose-built cafe/restaurant.

Tourism Whitsundays CEO Tim Booth said the investment would add to the resort's already strong reputation, pointing to its 2025 Hall of Fame induction at the Australian Tourism Awards after three consecutive years of gold wins in the Caravan and Holiday Parks category.

Shade, Sound and Access Details

The proposal also includes a large shed structure over the resort's existing jumping pillows to provide shade, weather protection and noise control. Whitsunday Regional Council sought additional information during the assessment process about potential noise impacts, including visitor numbers, outdoor speakers and mechanical equipment.

A condition of approval states the new facilities will be for the use of in-house guests only, and cannot be accessed by external visitors or day patrons.
