Sydney’s most scenic swim is nearly back! North Sydney Olympic Pool, the iconic harbourside destination that’s been making waves since the 1930s, is finally on track to reopen, and it’s looking better than ever.
If you’ve missed those morning laps beneath the Harbour Bridge or lazy afternoons by the water with Luna Park smiling in the background, you’re not alone. Closed since early 2021 for a long-awaited revamp, the pool is preparing to make its grand return.
So, what’s been happening behind those famous gates? Here’s what you need to know before diving back in.
North Sydney Pool: Sydney’s Favourite Swim Spot is Making a Comeback
A Sydney Classic with a Fresh Look
Originally built in 1935, North Sydney Pool has seen nearly a century of history, hosting swimming records, Empire Games, and generations of Sydneysiders soaking up the sun.
After years of wear and tear, the pool was due for a full restoration, not just a quick fix. The project set out to preserve its art deco charm while transforming it into a world-class, sustainable aquatic hub fit for the future.
Of course, like all great Sydney renovations, it hasn’t been without its drama. Between pandemic delays, wild weather, and rising construction costs, the upgrade has taken longer than expected. But the end is now in sight, and the new-look North Sydney Pool promises to deliver an experience well worth the wait.
What’s New at North Sydney Pool?
Expect a perfect blend of old-world beauty and modern luxury. The heritage features, like the gorgeous sundeck and harbourside wall, are being lovingly restored, while new additions will elevate the experience for swimmers of all ages.
Highlights include:
- Two upgraded heated pools (50m and 25m) with competition-standard facilities
- A brand-new waterplay and splash zone for kids
- A warm water therapy spa and sauna for relaxation
- Accessible ramps, lifts, and family change rooms
- Expanded fitness spaces, including spin and exercise studios overlooking the harbour
- Revamped spectator seating for almost 1,000 people, with permanent shade
- A refreshed Ripples cafe with those iconic Sydney Harbour views
Sustainability is a key focus too, with cutting-edge systems for energy and water efficiency. Solar and thermal technology, seawater harvesting, and electric heat pumps will help make this an environmentally responsible facility for years to come.
When Can You Dive Back In?
The big question everyone’s asking: when can we swim again? Current projections put completion at November 2025, with a reopening expected in early 2026 after the finishing touches are complete.
Pricing and membership details are yet to be announced, but the council promises a first-class community facility that balances heritage charm with modern comfort.
So get your goggles ready and your cameras charged, Sydney’s most photogenic pool is (almost) back!
