For Sydney families, learning to swim is more than just a childhood milestone - it's an essential skill shaped by our idyllic lifestyle. With beaches and pools woven into everyday life, parents are searching for swimming programs that build confidence, water safety and a genuine love of being in the water.
At Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre (ITAC), nestled beside Darling Harbour in the heart of the Sydney CBD, the Learn to Swim program has become a weekly ritual for hundreds of local kids. From nervous beginners taking their first strokes in the learner pool, to confident young swimmers joining squads in the 50-metre pool, ITAC offers structured, progressive lessons led by passionate instructors - all within one of Sydney's most iconic aquatic facilities.
Learn to Swim at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre: What Sydney Families Really Think
For many parents, swimming lessons are about far more than learning strokes. They are about well-being, independence and giving kids the ability to enjoy the water for life.
We spoke to four ITAC families about what keeps them coming back and what they'd tell any parent on the hunt for a Learn to Swim program.
Why Sydney Families Choose Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre
Ask any ITAC parent why they like coming to this swimming school, and a few features that come up again and again: location, atmosphere, and the quality of the staff.
For Tamara, mum of Nino (9), Luka (10), and Lara (6), the decision came down to the whole package. "It was the combination of welcoming staff, instructors, great environment, and the location," she says. "The facilities are excellent, and from the beginning, the kids felt comfortable and excited to come each week."
Tharini, whose son Nathan is enrolled at ITAC, appreciates both the central Sydney location and the ease of getting there. "It's an amazing central location with great parking options," she says, highlighting a key factor that resonates with any parent navigating the school-run in the inner city!
Wen, mum of Lily, was drawn in by ITAC's school holiday programs and the professionalism of the coaching team. "The swimming lessons here are great, especially the school holiday programs - perfectly tailored to train swimming in a fun way for different levels and needs," she says. "The coaches are professional and full of passion."
Dave, dad of Henry and Louis, recognises the consistency of quality across every touchpoint. "Fantastic teachers across all levels of learning, from intro to the water as babies through to learning all of the swimming strokes in the 50-metre pool," he says. "The administrative staff and front desk staff are also on top of all the details, so it feels like a really cohesive unit."
Programs for Every Stage: From Babies to Squad
One of ITAC's greatest strengths is the breadth of its Learn to Swim programs. Whether a child is taking their very first dip or preparing to join a competitive squad, there's a pathway to get them there, and parents say one of the biggest benefits of consistent lessons is seeing their children become more relaxed and independent in the water.
Dave started Henry and Louis as babies, and credits that early start with building a foundation that has lasted. "Starting them swimming as early as possible and coming every week without fail has given them the confidence to jump into any body of water and see it as a fun activity," he says. "We have really loved seeing the pride that they have as they develop their swimming skills."
Wen tried different approaches to find the best outcome for Lily. "We did both group lessons and private lessons. The group lesson is really good for peer support and learning from each other, while the private lessons are more tailored and targeted to get specific posture fixed or a skill upgraded," she explains.
It was the Swim Champs program - a specialist swimming and water safety program for children with additional needs - that proved to be the turning point for Nathan. "We started when Nathan was five, and he is now almost 10. He always loved splashing around in the water but really struggled to coordinate his limbs," recalls Tharini. "When we switched to Swim Champs, we truly saw him start to swim with confidence and love being at his lesson with such enthusiasm."
Some of the older children are enjoying the challenge of progressing into squads and advanced training, while school holiday programs are another popular option for families looking to accelerate progress with intensive training that keeps kids engaged and moving forward year-round.
The Instructors Make the Difference
Talking to all four families, one thing stands out above everything else: the instructors!
Tharini speaks warmly about the entire teaching team. "The swim instructor administration - Oliver and Scarlett - have been attentive, switched on and genuinely engaged in the goal of getting kids swimming up to squad level," she says. She reserves special praise for Nathan's instructor: "Isobel has been friendly, patient, kind and engaged, and Nathan looks forward to seeing her a lot. Thank you for your patience and kindness."
Tamara echoes this sentiment. "The instructors are great, the facilities are fantastic, and the kids feel supported and encouraged every step of the way," she says. "The kids have grown in skill and confidence, and swimming lessons have become something they genuinely enjoy."
Lily's experience with ITAC's coaching team also reflects the program's structured approach. "The coaches are so patient, and step by step, she gradually gets better and better," says Wen. "They do regular assessment and feedback, which I think is very useful."
Dave appreciates how well-designed the curriculum feels at each level. "Really well structured, with a strong focus on the basics at each level that step up gradually and set them up well for each progression," he says.
Real Progress, Real Confidence
Some of the most compelling family experiences from the ITAC Learn to Swim program are just how transformational it has been - not just in ability, but in the overall confidence these kids have developed through consistent swimming lessons.
Tamara says the difference in her children since starting lessons has been enormous. "When they first started, there was nervousness and hesitation, especially with certain skills and being in deeper water. Now they are much more confident, independent, and capable swimmers. It's been lovely watching them become so comfortable in the water."
Dave describes a similar journey for his boys. "It's been fantastic to see them develop their skills so that they can confidently play whatever games they like in the water - and it's great as parents to know that not only do they have the skills to survive in the water right now, but we know that will continue to improve with each week of lessons."
For Tharini, the journey has been especially meaningful. She describes swimming lessons at ITAC as "truly a gift to our school week and our school term, year-round" - and a safe, welcoming alternative for Nathan, who found team sports and competitive sporting environments difficult. "Thank you for being a safe sport alternative for a child who found team sport and sports fields overwhelming."
And then there are the kids themselves. Ask them what they love most, and the answers are pure joy:
"I love being part of squad and getting faster at swimming. It's fun training with everyone."
Luka, 10
"I love when the teachers do games, diving, and when we do races. Swimming lessons are really fun."
Nino, 9
"I love the games and diving down to get sinkies!"
Lara, 6
"I love freestyle the most, but diving is really fun as well!"

Why Families Recommend Swimming Lessons at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre
Based on the experiences of these four families - and many more like them - the answer is a clear yes!
"Absolutely," says Tamara, when asked if she'd recommend ITAC to a friend. “It’s been a really positive experience for our whole family. As a parent, I love seeing their confidence grow and know they’re developing such a valuable skill.”
"There's a great variety of pools, and we love to mix it up in all of them - and parking is really easy!" says Dave.
Tharini puts it simply: "We feel like we belong at Ian Thorpe. The staff are calm and happy, and the design and architecture make it a brilliant place for parents. to wait and relax"
Why Learning to Swim Is So Important for Sydney Kids
Between our famous beaches, harbour bays and backyard pools, and the outdoor lifestyle that defines summer here, water safety is a must for Sydney families.
"Living in Sydney and Australia generally, water is such a big part of life," says Tamara. "Learning to swim is not only important for safety but also for confidence, independence, as well as fun."
Dave sees it as a fundamental gift. "For many families in Sydney, the water is part of our way of life, so equipping kids with the skills to enjoy it safely feels like one of the most important things we can give them."
"It's so much harder to learn as an adult. School age is the time for really embedding those core physical stroke memory skills and solidifying them into unconscious muscle memory," adds Tharini, noting the practical advantages.
But the message is resoundingly clear: the earlier children learn to swim - and the better the program they're in - the more confident, capable, and safe they'll be for the rest of their lives.
Beyond the Lesson: Facilities and Fun
ITAC offers more than just swimming lessons. The facility itself is a striking piece of Sydney aquatic architecture in Ultimo and a destination in its own right. Families love the variety of pools suited to different ages and levels, the cafe just outside the centre, and the popular Flying Turtle water feature inside.
Many families also return outside of lesson times. Lily uses the pool to have fun with the kids who swim together, and sometimes to refresh the technique they just learnt from the class, and Tharini's family occasionally brings friends along on weekends.
“We often come outside of swimming lesson days to practise what we’ve been learning, but mainly also just to have fun in the water,” says Dave.
For Wen, ITAC has become part of her family’s routine: "It's my family's number one choice to start the weekend. The location is perfect, right next to Darling Harbour.”
