BYD is branching out into a whole new category with the M9, a seven-and-eight-seat people mover set to land in Australian showrooms during the last quarter of 2026.

If you've been eyeing the family car market and wondering what's next after the usual SUV suspects, this one is worth putting on your radar.

BYD M9 People Mover Confirmed For Australia in 2026

BYD is stepping into a category it hasn't touched before, and we're 100% here for it. Every model in its Australian lineup so far has been a sedan, hatch, ute or SUV, so the M9 marks the brand's first real go at a people mover. It's a deliberate move into space usually dominated by the Kia Carnival, and it signals BYD wants a foothold in every corner of the family car market, not just electric SUVs and sedans.

A Hybrid Built For Long Drives and Daily Runs

The M9 runs exclusively on BYD's DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor. For the school run, footy training and the weekly grocery haul, the top-spec Premium variant can travel up to 145km on electric power alone before the petrol engine even needs to kick in. And when it's time for the school holiday road trip, combined range stretches up to 850km, so fewer stops and more time actually enjoying the destination.

Both grades come with a BYD Blade Battery (36.60kWh in the Premium, 20.39kWh in the Dynamic), support AC and DC charging, and include Vehicle-to-Load functionality, meaning you can run devices or camping gear straight off the car's battery.

Room For the Whole Crew

At just over 5.1 metres long and 1.8 metres high, the BYD M9 is a genuinely big vehicle, and that size goes straight into cabin space. The range launches with a seven-seat Premium variant, followed by an eight-seat Dynamic. Second-row captain's chairs recline into a near zero-gravity position with heating and ventilation, which sounds like a small thing until you've got a toddler asleep in the back and a long drive ahead. Front seats are heated and ventilated too, so everyone stays comfortable no matter the season.

Luggage space sits at 470 litres with all seats up, and the M9 can tow up to 1,500kg braked, useful if the boat or camper trailer is part of family life.

Safety Features Families Will Want to Know About

Safety-wise, BYD says 73 per cent of the M9's structure is made from high-strength steel. The car comes with up to nine airbags, a 360-degree camera, five millimetre-wave radars and eight ultrasonic sensors, backing up a full suite of driver assistance tech.

How it Stacks up Against the Kia Carnival

The Kia Carnival has had the Australian people mover market pretty much to itself for years, holding close to 88 per cent of the mainstream segment and around three-quarters of the total market. Most Chinese brands entering this space so far have gone after luxury buyers instead, chasing something closer to a Mercedes-Benz V-Class than a family hauler. The BYD M9 is different. It's the first genuine, direct swing at the Carnival from a mainstream Chinese brand.

Size-wise, the two are close. The M9 is only slightly shorter and narrower than the Carnival, though it sits a touch taller and rides on a shorter wheelbase. The M9 pulls ahead in the powertrain. The Carnival's most efficient option is a hybrid, while the M9 offers plug-in hybrid power with genuine EV-only range for shorter trips, something no Carnival variant can currently match.

Australian Pricing & Release Date

Pricing hasn't been locked in yet, but there are some clues. The Carnival currently runs from around $54,560 to $76,840 before on-road costs. Based on how BYD has priced its other large vehicles in China relative to Australia, the M9 could land in a similar bracket, making it a genuine head-to-head rival rather than a premium alternative.

The BYD M9 is set to arrive in Australian showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2026.
