Every day, 58 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer, and nine lives are lost. Despite these sobering numbers, many women still face their fears in silence, avoiding conversations about symptoms, screening, or support. Well, a new campaign hopes to change that.
Launched ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Tetley’s Uncomfortable Cup campaign, in partnership with Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), encourages Australians to turn something as simple as a cup of tea into a life-changing conversation.
The idea is simple: sharing a brew could spark the kind of open, honest chat that leads to early detection and stronger support.
Breast Cancer Awareness: Turning a Cup of Tea into a Life-Changing Conversation
A Cup of Courage
As part of the campaign, Tetley is releasing a limited-edition pink pack of Tetley Tea Cup 100s, with 5 cents from every pack donated directly to BCNA.
Funds raised will help ensure every Australian affected by breast cancer can access trusted information, support services, and advocacy.
To further bring the message to life, Tetley has commissioned unique artisan cups featuring sensory designs that represent symptoms women may feel during self-examination – a powerful reminder of the importance of knowing your body.
“Sharing a cup of tea can be the catalyst for conversations, which, no matter how uncomfortable, are deeply necessary,” says Divya Shrivastava, Head of Marketing ANZ, Tetley.
Real Stories, Real Strength
For Melbourne mum Reshu Basnyat, diagnosed with triple-positive aggressive breast cancer at just 33 and while pregnant, BCNA’s support became a lifeline. “Seeing so many women bravely fighting breast cancer gave me and my husband strength and reassurance that we weren’t alone,” she says.
Sydney local Paula Correa, diagnosed in 2020, remembers the confronting reality of her own journey: “Campaigns such as Uncomfortable Cup remind people that early detection matters. Silence can cost lives.”
