Home is where we can all be ourselves. It’s where we spend time with family, and where we can build play into our everyday. Home is the most important playground in the world. Play is vital for each of us every day – it expands our creativity, strengthens our bonds and helps us to de-stress. It helps us learn, develop, experience and grow.

Many Australians are finding themselves spending more time at home with their families and looking for ways to keep the kids entertained with different activities. It’s important to embrace offline play with children, and focus on creative, active and challenging activities.

IKEA has come up with four easy ways to bring playing, painting, eating and reading to the backyard so the whole family can spend time together under the sun.

Planting Station

Utilise a children’s table and stools to set up a planting station for the kids. The UTTER table and stools are just the right height for small children, and are easy to rinse off afterwards. Growing your own produce or taking care of plants will help kids learn new skills from team work to responsibility. The GRÄSMARÖ 3-piece gardening set provides everything you need to get started.

Tablecloth Town

Metre fabric is great for letting the kids get crafty. Create a mealtime map by stitching where the cutlery and plates go. Kids can help set the table with this mealtime map. You can also cut strips from a fleece throw, like POLARVIDE, and sew on the fabric as roads, creating a map for them to drive their toy cars on.

Reading Corner

Kids love to imitate adults, so why not make a spot for them to read and relax, just like adults? Paint a house backdrop and invest in the BUNSÖ outdoor children’s chairs and SOCKER greenhouse to carry books in to create a cosy, dedicated spot for downtime.

Art Wall

Make an art wall from MDF and blackboard paint where kids can get inspired and unlock their creativity with chalk and paint. Prop a rail and containers to hold supplies so it’s easy to move indoors when the art’s done. The MÅLA range is equipped with paints, chalk, glitter paint and brushes to get you started.
