Glebe Markets to Remain Open, Thanks to Community Efforts and Interim Operator

  • All Ages

We've got some great news for those market lovers of Sydney!

The Glebe Markets have been saved from closure thanks to the heroic efforts of an interim operator, Organic Food Markets. These folks will be running the market at Glebe Public School for the next 12 months under a temporary licence with the NSW Department of Education.

A busy day at Glebe Markets.

After 31 long years of operation, the organisers, Bob and Judy McCumstie, announced that 25 February would be the market's last day of trading. But they were hoping that someone would take over the market and breathe new life into it, and voila - their prayers were answered!

The "Save Glebe Markets" petition was flooded with thousands of signatures, highlighting how important these markets are to the community. Stallholders were concerned about their future and livelihood, but the new arrangement with Organic Food Markets provides some much-needed relief.

Many Sydney politicians have voiced their commitment to keeping the markets running. State member for Balmain, Jamie Parker and Inner West Councillor and state candidate for Balmain, Philippa Scott, both made a point to announce that they'd be taking action and that the government is working to ensure the markets remain open.

So, mark your calendars because the Glebe Markets will be back to business as usual on 11 March, and we're all excited to see what new things Organic Food Markets brings to the table.
