The Great Northern Hotel

Changing weekly, the Sunday roast at the Great Northern Hotel in Carlton North is an institution. 

The focus on the food all across the week is good, old-fashioned pub fare at even better prices. Nothing like getting back to basics, or having someone else provide them for you without you having to lift a finger! Even better is when they get fancy, witht the low roasted porchetta with kipfler chips, brussel sprouts, bacon, and plum ketchup up there a perfect showcase of a decent dinner.

Changing with the weather and the best seasonal produce available, the $40 per-person set three-course roast is available every Sunday lunch at Fitzroy's Neighbourhood Wine until 5pm or until sold out. We're talking entree, main and dessert all sorted, in season, and utterly delicious, for 40 bucks. Bargain!

For an idea of what you might be greeted with every Sunday, you can check the previous week's menu on their website, and they'll often give you a heads up of what the main meat will be on the day you go.

For example, last week diners were treated to:

  • Entrée – Snapper, blue-eye & tomato soup
  • Main – Lamb shoulder roast, chat potatoes & kale & sprouts, yorkshire pudding, jus
  • Dessert – Roast rhubarb with raspberry, vanilla cream, meringue

Meat lovers rejoice, the Sunday Roast at The Exchange Hotel has three options in their $20 "Roast Collection", served with all the trimmings you know and love from noon until sold out. 

Perhaps you can be swayed by their hay roasted chicken supreme with truffle mash, braised leeks & caramelised parsnips? Or if the traditional roast is what you've come for, you'll be treated to three meats (a rotating collection of silverside, pork loin, lamb shoulder) with a comforting choice of roast spuds and parsnips with carrots and peas.

The Elephant and Wheelbarrow

For a proper English Sunday Lunch, where better to go than a British pub? From noon on Sundays, the Elephant and Wheelbarrow in the CBD serves up all your favourites (including Yorkshire pudding!) for $19.90.

Choose from two roasts and all the trimmings - the crispy roasted potatoes and gravy are standouts - and get a real taste of home.

The Roast Kitchen

The only thing better than a Sunday roast is a roast any day! The Roast Kitchen in Kew knows how much we love a roast, and they've promised the best in Melbourne, or it's FREE.

Traditional roast dinners start at $24.50 for regular and $33.50 for large, and are served with warm bread rolls, soups, salads and old-fashioned desserts. Choose from soft red wine marinated roast beef, pork loin, lamb or chicken, lamb shanks, or even the vegetarian version that consists of veggies peas/seasonal steamed veg, and roasted capsicum relish.

You can get a roast dinner any time of day any day of the week at The Roast Kitchen, and if the couch is calling too loud for such homely comfort food, you can get a roast to take away... bliss!

The cheapest of the bunch, for $15 you get a good dose of pub lunches past with your roast (with seasoned veg and gravy), sport on the telly and frosty beers in a dining room with legit 80s vibes at Balaclava Hotel.
