Sounds like an oxymoron, but healthy ice cream is a thing! Have your dessert and eat it too at one (or two!) of these health conscious ice cream joints - sans the dairy and the sugar headache.

Pepitas, Northern Beaches

Driving through the Northern Beaches Wednesday through Sunday, Pepitas serves up their artisanal VEGAN ice cream - from a too-cute pastel green kombi van! You can make sure you don't miss out on their made-from-scratch dairy free, gluten free ice cream (in flavours like Early Grey cashew-based ice cream, and Chocolate Sorbet) by checking out their GPS tracker on the Pepita's Facebook page.

Gelato Blue, Newtown

Famous for their non-dairy, coconut milk artisan gelato, everything at Gelato Blue is vegan, although many customers aren't even aware of this. With 'planet friendly' flavours like Mint Choc Chip, Passionfruit Cheesecake and Pannacotta (drool!), even non-vegans will be happy here...the only hard part will be choosing a flavour - or two!

Cocowhip, Around Sydney

Soft serve done differently, Gold Coast-born Cocowhip is made from coconut water, probiotic-rich 'organic coconut bio-fermented coconut powder', and plant-derived stabilisers...so it's healthy enough to have for breakfast! It's sweetened with xylitol, a plant-derived sweetener that's lower in calories than sugar, and cafes serving the stuff like to pimp it up with fun wholefood toppings - think raw chocolate, fresh fruit and date 'caramel'. You'll find Cocowhip at locations all around Sydney, including Girdlers Dee Why, The Health Emporium and Nourished Wholefoods Cafe in Avalon. Click here to find a Cocowhip supplier near you.

Chachas, Bondi Beach

Cha cha over to Chachas on Bondi Beach - it's the health food mecca for cashew-based 'ice cream' in countless unique flavours like Turmeric, and Miso Caramel - a crowd favourite. Acai Soft Serve Bowls and DIY 'Magnums' are also on the menu, and all the ice cream here is sweetened with fruit and rice malt - a better-for-you, fructose free sweetener. It's on the pricier side, but healthy and filling enough to eat for a lunch treat after a morning at the beach. It's pretty rich too, so you could even share a cup with the kids...or not!

Gelatissimo's New 95% Sugar Free Range And Vegan Flavours

Just before summer, Gelatissimo launched two new guilt-free flavours to make your next treat a real delight. 95% Sugar Free Caramel Latte and 95% Sugar Free Peppermint Crunch contain no artificial sweeteners and have less than 160 calories per scoop. So go on, make it a double.

And in February 2020 they rolled out their new vegan flavours. Caramel Mudcake and Triple Chocolate (see hero image), which have been carefully formulated with a combination of coconut and soy milk that result in a perfectly balanced and rich plant-based gelato. More recently they added Choc Cookies & Cream and Strawberries & Cream Tart to their vegan range. But all dietary preferences aside, the flavours are so delicious that even the most experienced gelato connoisseur won’t mind that the dairy is missing!

Green Gourmet, Newtown + St Leonards

This dessert parlour is a vegan and lactose intolerant's heaven, with everything from the ice cream to all the baked goods on offer being 100% plant-based. There are plenty gluten free options too (down to the ice cream cones), and the homemade tofu ice cream (don't knock it till you try it!) is sure to hit the spot, and comes in unique flavours like Black Sesame. Find out more here.

Nalini's, Bondi Junction

Chacha's sister restaurant, Nalini's 100% gluten free and probiotic-themed, gut-loving menu includes two soft cashew-based serve varieties, which the creamy, dreamy flavours changing daily. Find out more here.

Don't Forget Your Nearest Supermarket

Woolies, Coles and independent supermarkets are increasingly meeting consumer demand for quality dairy free and gluten free desserts. Relatively new to the market are ice cream brands Over The Moo (read: coconut milk-based ice cream; the We're Mint To Be and I Fell For Caramel are heavenly), and vegan choccie brand Pana's Organic Dairy Free Ice Cream - find it at Coles in Vanilla Bean, Mint Choc Chip (an ellaslist fave) and Salted Caramel. You can totally have your ice cream and eat it too with this magical stuff.
