The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is a botanical and cultural oasis, a green sanctuary in the heart of Sydney city. It is a place of natural beauty, where people, kids and families come for peace, relaxation, education, and to learn more about plants and horticulture.
It’s the perfect place for mums and bubs to picnic, lie back and watch the light dance through the foliage or pound the pavement with the pram for some exercise in magnificent surrounds. 2-5’s will love roaming the fairyland-like surrounds and as it rambles over 30 hectares, even the most active kids will have plenty of space to explore. Older children and mums can also learn about hte rich and diverse Aboriginal culture of Sydney with an Aboriginal guide. There is something for everyone here, you can go on a free daily volunteer-led tour of the Garden and hear about the fascinating plants and stories over the past 200 years, access is along the paved, pram-friendly pathways. Grab a take away coffee or enjoy fine dining, or just chill out and enjoy the amazing harbour views.
There are fantastic School Holiday Activities designed for children 6-13 years, but often catering for the whole family.
They also run the excellent Dandy Lions, a low cost children’s activity for preschoolers aged 0-5yrs and their parent/carer every Thursday morning.
Highlight! No visit to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is complete without an indulgent tour aboard the hop on-hop off Choo Choo Express - a trackless train making its way through the grounds throughout the day. Kids under 3yrs are FREE, 3-17yrs $5, and adults $10.
Ellaslist opinion: The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is the perfect place to stop and recharge when you’ve been out and about with your kids in the city. We always stop there if we’ve been to the Opera House or the Art Gallery and wish we’d given ourselves more time to wander. If you stick to the paths, it is very pram friendly and there are plenty of options for child-friendly food outlets or throw down a rug and enjoy your own picnic. There is something otherworldly about the space and while the kids are still young enough to believe in fairies, it is a magic place for them to play and let their imaginations run wild.
