Robertson Park Watsons Bay: New Playground, Beach Fun & More

Picture the scene: a glorious day followed by a warm evening, a killer sunset over the harbour, a rug, your family and friends eating piping hot fish and chips from Doyles takeaway, and watching the ferries come and go – that's Robertson Park in Watson's Bay for you!

Robertson Park Was Made For Family Days Outdoors

Robertson Park has long been one of the Eastern Suburbs' best-loved family spots, so we were thrilled when we heard that its treasured playground is about to get a serious revival.

What's Happening to the Playground

Woollahra Council is overhauling the Robertson Park playground, which was last upgraded in 2006. Construction started in June 2026, and the playground will stay closed until November, so it's worth checking before you pack the picnic rug.

Extensive community feedback shaped the new design, and it shows. Locals asked for more equipment across a wider age range, more natural play elements and better accessibility, and the draft plan delivers on all three.

The new digs will include a tall climbing tower with rope nets and a giant tunnel slide for kids aged 8 and up, a smaller climbing structure with its own rope net and slide for younger children, plus a nature-inspired zone with a jungle-balance rope and a rope bridge. Timber and sandstone elements will tie the new equipment into the park's natural surrounds, and a handful of well-loved existing features (including the see-saw springer, the bubbler and the shade sails) are being cleaned up and kept.

Where to Play in the Meantime

While the playground's closed, two nearby alternatives are an easy detour: Lyne Park in Rose Bay and Samuel Park in Vaucluse. Both are a short drive from Watsons Bay and worth adding to your rotation until November.

What Else is on Offer at Robertson Park

Even with the play equipment fenced off, Robertson Park is worth the trip on its own!

The park spans the isthmus between Sydney Harbour and the Pacific, so the views stretch in every direction, from the harbour on one side to the ocean at The Gap on the other. Massive Moreton Bay fig trees offer plenty of shade for a picnic blanket, and the grassy slopes are perfect for a kick of the footy or letting toddlers run wild.

Hit the Beach

Just across the grass, Watsons Bay's shallow harbour beach is ideal for little ones who aren't quite ready for the surf. It's calm, sandy and perfect for a paddle, with the ferry wharf close enough for older kids to watch the boats come and go. For a proper swim, Watsons Bay Baths is around the corner.

Family Feasting

No trip to Robertson Park is complete without takeaway fish and chips from Doyles on the Wharf or the Watsons Bay Hotel. Grab a picnic table (if you can snag one on a weekend) or find a shady spot under the figs, and settle in for the sunset over the harbour.
