Blue Mountains Ice Skating Rink: A Cool Family Adventure in Leura

Bushwalks may get most of the attention in the Blue Mountains, but families can also lace up their skates and glide across real ice at the Blue Mountains Ice Skating Rink.

Hidden within the grounds of Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains in Leura, this permanent indoor attraction brings frosty fun to the mountains throughout the year — and it's open to the public!

The rink is open to resort guests, locals and day-trippers, so there is no need to book a hotel stay before taking to the ice. Its indoor setting also makes it a handy addition to a Blue Mountains itinerary when rain, fog or chilly winds put outdoor adventures on hold.

What to Know Before Visiting

The rink covers almost 600 square metres and measures approximately 25 by 22 metres. It's a tad smaller than a full Olympic rink, which can make the space feel more manageable for young skaters and nervous beginners.

Public sessions run for 90 minutes, giving children enough time to get comfortable before attempting their first wobbly lap away from the railing. Music and colourful lights add a playful atmosphere during general skating sessions.

Skate hire is included with admission, and every skater must wear a helmet. Helmets are supplied free of charge, although visitors are welcome to bring their own. Penguin skating aids can be hired for $5 to help beginners work on their balance and build confidence.

The minimum skating age is 2. Small children whose feet do not yet fit the regular hire skates can use strap-on infant skates over their own closed-toe shoes. This option allows younger siblings to join the action rather than watching from the sidelines.

Public Skating Sessions

Blue Mountains Ice Skating Rink operates every day of the year except Christmas Day, with sessions scheduled at set times rather than continuous entry. Each skating session lasts 90 minutes, followed by a 30-minute break while the ice is resurfaced.

During NSW school terms, the rink follows alternating Week A and Week B timetables:

Monday: Public sessions at 10 am during Week A, followed by sessions at 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm. During Week B, public sessions begin at 12 pm, while the 6 pm slot is reserved for Stick & Puck.
Tuesday: Public sessions at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm.
Wednesday: Public sessions at 12 pm, 2 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm.
Thursday: Cheap Skate public sessions at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm.
Friday: Public sessions at 12 pm, 2 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm. Coffee Club runs at 10 am during the school term, with no general public skating during that session.
Saturday: Public sessions at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm, followed by Disco on Ice from 6 pm to 7.30 pm.
Sunday: Public sessions at 10 am, 12 pm and 2 pm. Learn 2 Skate runs from 4 pm during the school term, so that period is unavailable for public skating.

Session times can change during school holidays and on public holidays, when additional sessions may be added. Families should check the live booking calendar before travelling, particularly for weekends and holiday periods.

Blue Mountains Ice Skating Rink Prices

Regular public skating prices are: $25 for adults; $20 for children; $10 for infants; $65 Family Pass (2 adults + 2 children or 1 adult + 3 children).

Thursday's Cheap Skate sessions offer reduced admission: $20 for adults; $15 for children; $5 for infants; $50 Family Pass (2 adults + 2 children or 1 adult + 3 children).

Skate hire and helmet use are included in the entry price. Penguin skating aids cost an additional $5, subject to availability.

More Ways to Get on the Ice

Families who catch the skating bug can explore several sessions beyond general admission. Learn 2 Skate classes run on Sundays during NSW school terms, while Stick & Puck sessions give budding hockey players time to practise with goals and pucks provided.

Saturday evening's Disco on Ice adds music and lights to the regular skating experience, while the Friday morning Coffee Club offers adults a quieter session with coaching and a warm drink afterwards.

Birthday party packages are also available, with a dedicated party room that can be hired for celebrations. Larger groups can enquire about private rink bookings.

What to Wear

The rink temperature usually sits between 8 and 15 degrees Celsius, so warm layers are worth packing even when the weather outside feels mild. Flexible clothing and long pants will make skating more comfortable while providing some protection from the ice after an inevitable tumble.

Every skater needs to wear socks with the hire skates. Families who forget them can purchase a pair at the rink for $5. Young children using strap-on infant skates should arrive in secure, closed-toe shoes.

The ice rink kiosk sells snacks, cold drinks and espresso coffee. Lara's and Sublime Café are also located nearby within Fairmont Resort when the family needs something more substantial after skating.

Ice rink visitors receive two hours of complimentary parking, which must be validated at the boot-hire desk using the rink's QR registration system. The most convenient parking is on levels 2 and 3. From level two, follow the ramp at the end of the car park to reach the rink. Accessible parking is available near the resort's main lobby, where concierge staff can assist with wheelchair access.

Online bookings are strongly recommended because each session has a capacity limit. Weekends and school holidays are the busiest periods, and the venue is cashless.
