Super Nature

Nature has long been art's great muse, but Super Nature at the Art Gallery of New South Wales takes things a step further, tracing the evolving (and occasionally complicated) relationship between humans and the natural world.

Super Nature at the Art Gallery of New South Wales

Drawn from the Gallery's own collection, the Super Nature exhibition unfolds across four distinct spaces, each examining a different point of intersection: where people and landscapes entwine; how gardens become sites of memory and reflection; the wildness that exists alongside — and within — us; and the cultivation of nature as a means of survival and sustenance. It's a colourful and thought-provoking exhibition for all ages.

Families will find plenty to hold their attention. A highlight is teamLab's immersive digital work Flowers and people – gold (2015), where computer-generated blooms bud, blossom, and fade across luminous screens in a quietly mesmerising cycle. Nearby, Grayson Perry's monumental woodcut Animal spirit (2016) brings sharp wit to modern commerce, while Kathy Temin's My monument: black garden (2010-11) rises in dramatic form — an otherworldly garden rendered in velvety synthetic fur.

The free Super Nature is an exhibition that encourages lingering, conversation and a slower kind of looking.
