Sunset Sessions are back at Cockatoo Island!


Cockatoo Island is a time capsule of Australian history and is peppered with incredible landmarks from different eras that help to transport families back in time. These landmarks include a historic shipbuilding facility as well as the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Convict Site. Your kids will have a blast exploring the former convict gaol and dockyard!

In addition, the island offers families a range of exciting attractions throughout the year as well as award-winning accommodation, including a waterfront campground. That’s right, there’s so much to do that you may wish to consider staying a night or two with the kids!

Family Tours

These school holidays, Cockatoo Island are running all-ages tours throughout December and January, perfect for families and curious minds. Explore the island’s layered history with the Island Highlights Tour, uncover 134 years of maritime history on the Historic Dockyard Tour, or delve into the island’s turbulent penal history with the Convict Prison Tour.

Tours are $26 per adult and $16 per child.

Enjoy a Relaxed Outdoor Concert

Sydney's favourite live music series has returned to Cockatoo Island! The 2025 season of Sunset Sessions runs on Saturday afternoons from 11 January to 5 April.

For just $35, parents can enjoy performances by talented local musicians in an outdoor venue with epic harbour views. Plus, families can pack a picnic or purchase food and beverage at the venue for a hassle-free experience.

Storytime Special: Marion and The Forty Thieves (feat. Dr Sarah Luke)

For one day only, special guest Dr Sarah Luke will be presenting her new novel Marion and the Forty Thieves that is partially set on Cockatoo Island! Come along on Friday 17 January to hear the amazing tale of Marion Neitenstein whose father is the principal of a nautical school ship, moored at Cockatoo Island. The only girl among a rowdy group of boys, Marion finds herself in danger when she uncovers a plot involving the notorious Forty Thieves gang. 

Dr Sarah Luke will read passages from her exciting novel, sign copies, plus, lead a hands-on creative writing workshop that's perfect for kids aged 7 to 12. 

Tickets are $10 per person; $35 per family (2 adults and 2 children OR 1 adult and 3 children).

Don't miss the Cockatoo Island Steam Crane Demonstration!


Toot, toot! Travel to the era when steam power ruled and see one of the island’s ‘Iron Giants’ in action! Specialist volunteers now carry out maintenance checks on Cockatoo Island’s steam cranes on the first Tuesday of every month. Planning to visit on 4 February? Pop by the Docks Precinct between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm for a demonstration of a steam crane dating to the island’s storied dockyard era (1857 to 1992). Steam and spectacle – plus some toots and whistles – guaranteed!
