As you explore convict-era buildings, including the Mess Hall, Barracks and Convict Workshops, a knowledgeable guide will share historical anecdotes and prompt you and your kids to get playful and recreate sounds from the island’s former gaol. Think whispered conversations, dramatic convict ballads, the percussive clank of machinery and hand tools…even animal noises!

The island features two family-friendly cafés. Marina Café & Bar is a harbour-side hangout that exudes country-style pub charm. Meanwhile, Cockatoo Overboard is a short stroll from the ferry wharf and is an opportunity for kids to refuel in a scenic setting. Both venues offer kid's specials and are licensed to serve alcohol.

The Convict Precinct Tour, Sandstone to Steel Tour and lower Island Tour are each an opportunity to enjoy a crash course in the island’s history. Meanwhile, Dark Past Tour is a chance for families to discover the island’s secrets, scandals and skeletons as the sun sets. Tickets for each tour cost $16 for kids (12 and under) and $25 for adults.
