Kids at the Conservatorium of Music School Holiday Workshops

Do your kids love singing, musical instruments and a little drama? A school holiday workshop at Open Academy might be just what you're looking for!

Open Academy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Structured workshops are based on the Orff-Schulwerk approach, Dalcroze and Kodaly methods and will include activities such as singing, imitation, movement, playing tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments, improvisation, story-telling and guided listening activities.

Participants only need to attend one workshop, as the material will be repeated the following day.

Holiday Workshops for 3 - 4yrs

These youngsters will explore the musical concepts of pitch, beat, and tempo through creative play and a range of unconscious learning activities. Listening and motor skills will be engaged through echo singing, movement, imitation, playing percussion instruments, and musical games.

This workshop will run for 50 minutes each day and be taken by tutor Simona Green. Parents/guardians are encouraged to sit in this workshop with their children to listen to the activities and recreate them at home. The material presented in this workshop is similar to that of the weekly Red classes.

Holiday Workshops for 4 - 5yrs 

Activities in this workshop will be similar to the workshop for 3-4's, but at a slightly faster pace and targeted to match the higher levels of the older participants. More complex rhythmic activities and listening exercises will be presented, including call-and-response singing and musical signal recognition.

This workshop will run for 50 minutes each day and will be taken by tutor Simona Green. Parents/guardians are not required to sit in on this workshop, but attendance is encouraged. The material presented in this workshop is similar to that of the weekly Orange classes, providing a great opportunity to test our program!

Holiday Workshops for 5 - 6yrs

This workshop runs for 3 hours each day, from 9 am to 12 pm and 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. 

Activities include:

• Pitch and rhythm work using tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments.
• Active listening activities.
• The opportunity to make your own instrument if time allows.

Tutor Irene Stone and Samantha Xu will take the workshop. The material presented is similar to that of the weekly Yellow classes.

Holiday Workshops for 6 - 10yrs

This workshop runs for 5 hours daily, from 9 am to 2 pm. 

Activities include:

• Pitch and rhythm work using tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments.
• Active listening activities.
• The opportunity to make your own instrument.

Tutor Irene Stone and Samantha Xu will take the workshop. The material presented is similar to the weekly Green and Blue classes.

There will be two short breaks for morning tea and lunch (participants must bring their own food). Parents/guardians are welcome to drop off their children in the morning and return at 1.45 pm for a 'mini performance' of the children's activities from the workshop.

*Please note that students only need to attend one workshop as the material presented is the same each day.
