Kids Contemporary Brings Colour and Creativity to Sydney Contemporary 2025

Sydney’s biggest celebration of contemporary art is back this September — and this year, it’s more kid-friendly than ever! Sydney Contemporary returns to Carriageworks from 11–14 September 2025, and as part of its jam-packed program, little art lovers can look forward to Kids Contemporary — a bright, hands-on space where creativity and self-expression take centre stage.

There is so much for every type of art lover at Sydney Contemporary, but for us? It's Kids Contemporary that’s capturing our hearts — thanks to the brilliant mind of celebrated Australian artist Glenn Barkley.

Barkley, widely known for his joyful and bold ceramic works, is bringing Positive! Affirmation! Workshop! to the fair — a vibrant, interactive installation designed especially for children.

Think wearable art, positive vibes, and plenty of colour. Kids can cut out quirky shapes like pots, shells, faces and more, transforming them into necklaces, badges, or stickers.

Barkley’s signature collage style sets the scene, with walls wrapped in his playful artwork and slogans like “You’re the greatest!” and “There are no losers in contemporary art!” adding a confidence-boosting twist.

This is more than just a craft corner — it’s a celebration of imagination, individuality and contemporary art through a kid’s eyes. So if you’re heading to Sydney Contemporary with the family in tow, be sure to carve out time for this colour-packed creative escape.
