Free Heritage Tours of the Coal Loader

There is far more hiding beneath The Coal Loader than its harbourside picnic lawns suggest. On the first and third Saturday of each month, visitors can join a free guided heritage tour and venture into parts of this fascinating Waverton landmark that are usually closed to the public.

Step Inside Sydney's Industrial Past on a Free Coal Loader Heritage Tour

Led by volunteer guides, the tours uncover how the former industrial facility evolved into the heritage-listed Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability. Along the way, visitors will hear stories from the site's past, discover surviving industrial features and learn how the waterfront precinct has been adapted for a greener future.

Explore the Hidden Tunnel 1

The tour's biggest drawcard is entry into heritage-preserved Tunnel 1, an atmospheric sandstone passage that cannot ordinarily be explored by the public. The tunnel is one of four former coal-loading tunnels beneath the site and has been preserved as a reminder of The Coal Loader's industrial history.

Elsewhere beneath the platform, Tunnel 2 now leads walkers towards Balls Head Reserve, Tunnel 3 houses an extensive water-reuse system and Tunnel 4 provides a winter home for threatened Eastern Large Bent-wing Bats. These creative new uses offer an intriguing look at how old infrastructure can support public access, sustainable technology and wildlife conservation.

Make a Day of Your Visit

Once the tour finishes, take some time to explore the rest of the waterfront site. Pack a picnic for the expansive Coal Loader Platform, follow Tunnel 2 towards Balls Head Reserve or wander through the gardens and sustainable displays. There is space for a bike ride or a game of bocce, along with sweeping harbour views that make lingering very tempting.

Tours run on the first and third Saturday of each month and begin at 10.30 am.

Upcoming 2026 dates include 1 and 15 August, 5 and 19 September, 3 and 17 October, 7 and 21 November, and 5 and 19 December. Sessions are scheduled until noon, so allow up to 90 minutes for the experience.
