Bloodsuckers: Nature❜s Vampires at Australian Museum

If your kids are obsessed with all things creepy, crawly and a little bit gross, then the Australian Museum's latest exhibition is about to become their new favourite obsession.

Bloodsuckers: Nature's Vampires has landed in Sydney, and it's every bit as fascinating — and only slightly terrifying — as it sounds.

What's Inside Bloodsuckers: Nature's Vampires at Australian Museum

The exhibition takes visitors beyond ancient myths to discover the surprising science of the world's most notorious feeders, from leeches and mosquitoes to vampire bats and beyond. Did you know that leeches feed as little as once a year? Yeah, the kids are going to love that fact at the dinner table.

Engaging and informative, Bloodsuckers is designed with families and science lovers in mind, so you won't just be dragging the kids around, staring at display cases. Interactive exhibits include a mozzie swarm simulator, microscopes and touchable models, plus you'll discover the incredible role these creatures can play in modern medicine and which bloodsuckers to watch out for on your next bushwalk. There's also a brilliant section exploring the supernatural bloodsuckers from legends and popular culture that these curious creatures have inspired — hello, vampires!

Good to know before you go:

Bloodsuckers is best suited to older children aged 8 and up, so it's a great one for primary school-aged kids and teens.

Allow around 50-70 minutes for your visit, and note that no food or drink is permitted inside the exhibition space. Plan your visit to Bistro Gadi on Level 4 before or after your visit.

For families with sensory needs, low-sensory sessions run on the first Tuesday of each month at 12.30 pm and 1 pm, with reduced visitor numbers, lower sound levels, and adjusted lighting.
