Temple of Boom at NGV: A Family-Friendly Reimagining of The Parthenon in Melbourne

Ever tried to explain the grandeur of The Parthenon to a six-year-old who thinks ancient history is a type of cereal?

Architects Adam Newman and Kelvin Tsang have done one better with the Temple of Boom in Melbourne! This architectural triumph takes the ancient wonder and brings it to life, minus the confusing history lesson. It's all the awe of Athens without your little one's wide-eyed confusion – or the need to find a suitable picture in an encyclopedia. Now that's progress!

This architectural marvel, part of NGV's Architecture Commission for 2022, invites you to take a leisurely stroll around an art-infused Parthenon without the need for a passport or packing snacks for a long flight. The vibrant artworks that adorn this structure breathe fresh life into an ancient monument, kind of like when your three-year-old decided to redecorate the living room walls with crayons, but much, much better.

Designed to be a community meeting place and outdoor venue for performances and live music, Temple of Boom is an experience for the whole family.

Feel the grandeur of standing in the shadow of a monument and relive those precious 'time-out' moments while your kids run around exploring art. Just watch out for the "But why doesn't our house look like this?" questions on the drive home.

Where:    Ground Level, Grollo Equiset Garden, National Gallery of Victoria
When:     2 August to 1 October, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm daily
Cost:      This is a free event and booking is not required, but your appreciation for art (and patience with endless kiddo questions) is mandatory!
