Barbie®: The Exhibition is Coming to Melbourne Museum
Melbourne is getting a serious splash of pink when Barbie®: The Exhibition arrives at Melbourne Museum, and yes, this one has family day out written all over it.
Whether your kids are deep in their Barbie® era or you grew up with a case full of tiny outfits, this exhibition is set to be a fun little trip through toy history, design and pure nostalgia.
What's Inside Barbie®: The Exhibition
The exhibition follows Barbie® from her 1959 debut right through to today, with more than 250 dolls and accessories on display. That means plenty of fashion moments, changing hairstyles, dream careers, cars, furniture and tiny details that somehow still manage to spark big opinions.
There's even a rare first-edition Barbie®, a dedicated Ken section, and the original 1962 Barbie® Dreamhouse, which is worth a look even if you have only ever known the newer, glossier versions.
The exhibition also looks at how Barbie® has shifted over the decades, from style and body shapes to culture, careers and the way kids play.
Why Families Will Love It
For kids, there's the fun of seeing Barbie® on a huge scale, with dolls, outfits and dreamy little accessories lined up like a candy-coloured time machine. For adults, there's a good chance it will unlock a very specific childhood memory you forgot was still rattling around in your brain.
It's also an easy exhibition to enjoy across all ages. Younger kids can follow the colour, sparkle, and familiar characters, while older kids may get more out of the design, history, and evolving ideas behind Barbie®'s world. Parents, meanwhile, can quietly assess which Dreamhouse era was superior.
Good to Know
Tickets include museum entry, so you can make a bigger day of it while you're there. A sensory map and large-format text will also be available at the exhibition, which will be helpful for families planning a calmer, more supported visit.
