A lava lamp is a unique and mesmerising decorative item that consists of a glass or plastic container filled with a combination of liquid and colourful blobs that move and flow in a captivating manner.

The key components of a lava lamp are usually a mixture of oil and water, with added food colouring to create vibrant hues. When the lamp is turned on, a heat source underneath the container warms the liquid, causing the coloured blobs to rise and fall, resembling slow-moving lava or mesmerising blobs in motion. The effect is achieved through the principles of density and heat convection, creating a visually appealing display that can be both relaxing and visually stimulating, for both kids and adults!

Step 1: Prepare the Bottle

Choose a clean and transparent bottle or jar for your lamp. The size of the bottle is up to you, but a 500ml bottle works well for this project. Make sure to remove any labels or stickers that might be present.

Step 2: Fill the Bottle

Fill the bottle about three-quarters of the way with vegetable oil. The oil will serve as the main liquid component of your lamp.

Step 3: Add Water

Slowly pour water into the bottle, leaving some space at the top. It's important not to fill the bottle completely, as you'll need some room for the lava lamp's mesmerising bubbles to form.

Step 4: Add Food Colouring

Choose your favourite colour of food colouring and add a few drops to the mixture inside the bottle. This is where your creativity can shine! Experiment with different colour combinations to create the desired effect. The food colouring will mix with the water and create vibrant hues within the lamp.

Step 5: Add Glitter (Optional)

For an extra touch of sparkle, add a pinch of glitter to the bottle. The glitter will float and twinkle within the lamp, enhancing the visual spectacle.

Step 6: The Magic Begins!

Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces. Drop one piece into the bottle and watch as the chemical reaction unfolds. The tablet contains citric acid and baking soda, which react with water to produce carbon dioxide gas bubbles. These bubbles rise through the oil, carrying droplets of coloured water with them, creating the mesmerising lava effect.

Step 7: Repeat and Enjoy!

Continue dropping small pieces of Alka-Seltzer tablet into the bottle whenever the bubbles start to fade. You can repeat this step as many times as you like to keep the lamp active for a longer duration. Just make sure not to add too many tablets at once, as it may cause an overflow.

Optional: Illuminate With a Flashlight

To enhance the visual experience, turn off the lights in the room and use a flashlight to shine light through the bottle. The light will illuminate the colourful bubbles, creating a stunning glow.

Feel free to experiment with different colours, glitter, and even shapes of bottles to customise your lava lamp further. Now, sit back, relax, and let the mesmerising lava lamp take you on a colourful journey through time and space!
