Your quick trip to Indonesian paradise could soon become a lengthy one if you're travelling on a budget airline from Australia.

A new airport several hours from the popular holiday hot spots in Bali will begin construction in early 2020 and this will be touch down for passengers on budget airline carriers.

Those keen to save a buck on flights will land in the northern village of Kubutambahan, at the opposite end of the current airport in Denpasar. In tourist speak this is roughly three hours away from Bali favourites Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu.

Bali Or Bust

It's no surprise that Bali is bursting at the seams with tourists and the existing Ngurah Rai International Airport based in Denpasar is struggling to keep up with demand, maxing out all of its runways. The second airport would ease the pressure from Ngurah Rai as well as have the positive effect of driving tourism in the island’s undeveloped North.

“All the low-cost carriers [will fly] in the north and the normal [carriers will fly] in the south,” Indonesian Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi told 9News.

All Australian budget airlines (roughly 70% of Australian flights to Bali ) including Jetstar will be redirected to the new airport when construction finishes in 2022.

Time to sip Bintangs in the north? Cheers to that!
