The Famous Zig Zag Railway is Reopening in 2023

Zig Zag Railway reopening
The Zig Zag railway was badly damaged by bushfires that proved to be a huge obstacle on the path to reopening.

The beloved Zig Zag Railway had its accreditation removed in 2012, and the impact of multiple natural disasters, including the 2013 bushfires and the Gospers Mountain mega blaze in 2019, has since delayed its reopening.

Following a decade-long refurbishment effort, an incredibly dedicated team of volunteers has been working tirelessly to refurbish the railway tracks and locomotives, and they can't wait to welcome visitors back on board.

With plans to start running passenger journeys before winter 2023 arrives, it won't be long before you can take a scenic ride through the stunning Lithgow countryside once again.

Get ready to hop on board the historic Zig Zag railway and experience a one-of-a-kind adventure!

The refurbishment team has completely rebuilt the track, restored the signalling infrastructure, and even revived two locomotives and passenger carts.

Financial input to the tune of several million dollars from both state and federal governments has helped revive the railway, as well as the tireless efforts of dedicated volunteers. The result is a beautifully restored and upgraded railway that promises to delight visitors near and far.

The History of Zig Zag Railway

Zig Zag Railway reopening
The Zig Zag Railway has long been an important part of local and national heritage.

The one-of-a-kind Zig Zag heritage railway in the Blue Mountains has a fascinating history dating back to 1869.

Originally part of the Main Western Line, this impressive railway linked Sydney and the Central Tablelands, serving as a crucial transport route for both goods and passengers travelling between western NSW and Sydney.

Despite the challenging terrain of the Blue Mountains, the railway line was considered an incredible engineering feat at the time, and it has since become an iconic symbol of Australia's early railway era. In fact, during the 1970s, the railway was transformed into a popular tourist attraction for steam trains, and it has remained a beloved destination for visitors from all over the world ever since.
