Big news for Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs: Woollahra is officially getting a train station – the first new heavy rail station to be built in Sydney in more than a decade.
After years of talk (stretching back to the 1970s!), the project has finally been green-lit, promising faster commutes, thousands of new homes, and a big shake-up for one of Sydney’s leafiest pockets.
Woollahra Is Finally Getting a Train Station – And 10,000 New Homes Along With It
A Long-Awaited Addition to the Eastern Suburbs Line
Set to slot neatly between Edgecliff and Bondi Junction on the Eastern Suburbs line, the brand-new Woollahra Station will connect locals to the CBD in just eight minutes. For anyone who’s ever dreamed of skipping the traffic on New South Head Road, this is a public transport dream come true.
The station announcement comes hand-in-hand with plans to deliver 10,000 new homes across Woollahra and Edgecliff. With a focus on more affordable and well-connected living, the development is designed to keep Sydneysiders close to jobs, schools, green space and services — instead of pushing families further and further from the city.
Why Now?
Sydney’s population grew by more than 107,000 people in the past year alone, and housing affordability continues to be one of the city’s biggest challenges. According to the NSW Productivity Commission, Woollahra is actually one of the most suitable LGAs for new housing, but growth has lagged for decades due to expensive, low-density housing stock.
Premier Chris Minns says the new station and housing boost will help balance development across the city:
“This new train station will allow us to deliver up to ten thousand new homes right here in the heart of Sydney, close to jobs, public transport, green space and essential services.”
When Will Woollahra Station Open?
The rezoning process is expected to take around two years, and while an official opening date hasn’t been announced, construction will start on the site originally earmarked for the station decades ago. Once complete, Woollahra Station will be the first heavy rail station Sydney has added since 2015.
A Community Game-Changer
Of course, not everyone in Woollahra will be cheering — the area is famous for its “NIMBY” pushback. But the NSW Government has made it clear they’re pushing ahead. Housing Minister Rose Jackson explained: “We’re not afraid to take on NIMBYs to deliver more housing where there is the space and infrastructure to support it. This new station just makes sense.”
For families, workers, and future residents, Woollahra Station means more than just a train stop — it’s a chance to live in the Eastern Suburbs without the impossible price tag, all while enjoying faster commutes and improved community connections.
