Forget what you thought you knew about New York, Paris, or hell—even Sydney, being the most popular place in the world to travel to—as Trip Advisor has named the winner of their Global Traveller's Choice Award, and the result might surprise you.

Apparently, it’s good ol’ Blighty that's home to the acclaimed city, as London has taken out the top spot for the first time since 2016, pipping other iconic European cities like Prague, Rome and Barcelona to the post.

Why London?

Justifying their choice, TripAdvisor said on its website: "There's so much to see and do in London, it's easy to be overwhelmed.

"Major sights like the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace are on most visitors' itineraries, but no matter what your interests, you'll probably find something here. Art lovers should make a beeline for the National Gallery and the Tate Modern. If military history's your thing, don't miss the Cabinet War Rooms.

"Finally, forget everything you've heard about bland, mushy British food - the restaurant scene here is fabulous.”

Laura Citron, CEO of Visit London, said: "We are delighted to see London top the list of TripAdvisor's Global Traveller's Choice awards. London has an exciting history as a centre for creativity and free thinking, from Shakespeare to the birth of punk and the catwalks of today. This creative energy and cultural vibrancy can be felt in every aspect of London life: food, fashion, arts, exhibitions, shops, and nightlife."

A European Top 5 Scoop

To claim the title, London outstripped French capital Paris, Italy's Rome, Greece's largest island, Crete, and the Indonesian favourite among Aussie families, Bali. Not a bad feat, London!
