Toys ❛R❜ Us Australia Are Back, Baby!

  • Parents Only

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of them, just when you thought retail was dead, just when you started killing time at IKEA with the kids (no?), Toys R Us made the shock announcement today that they are back in business!

It's been nearly a year since the retail giant went into liquidation but they will return to Australia in June.

Hobby Warehouse will begin using the Toys R Us and Babies R Us branding under an agreement with US parent company Tru Kids Inc.

But Not As You Know It

Don't expect to see the huge warehouse-style outlets Toys R US were known for. This time there will be an online focus with the bricks and mortar offering "small and fewer physical 'experience centres' that allow children and their families and friends" to see and touch the toys.

“We are delighted to bring the much-loved brands of Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us back to Australia and to introduce them to New Zealand. We believe play is extremely important in the development and wellbeing of children and in their interaction with family and friends. Play enables children to develop their imagination, collaborate, problem solve, explore, create or simply express themselves spontaneously,” Hobby Warehouse chief executive, Louis Mittoni, said.

“Our mission is to encourage children to engage with as many forms of play as we possibly can. Hobby Warehouse is a digital native with a keen understanding of how to accelerate and match the requirements of the modern shopper.”

Time To Play

Toys ‘R’ Us will be launching an online store on June 12 and will also be expanding to New Zealand for the first time. The physical “experience centres” will be launched at the start of 2020.
