If you’re a parent on the eternal quest for screen-free entertainment that doesn’t drive you up the wall, let me introduce you to a little gem called the Toniebox. This clever audio player for kids has become a surprise hit in our house, and that’s saying something when you’ve got three kids with wildly different tastes.
From bedtime stories to car sing-alongs, the Toniebox has slotted seamlessly into our daily routine, giving the iPad a well-earned break and bringing back the magic of storytelling in the most kid-friendly way imaginable.
It’s become a real asset in our home, and I’d love to share why we love it so much.
ellaslist Reviews: Toniebox - The Screen-Free Audio Player My Three Kids All Love (And I Do Too)
As a mum of three kids aged 8, 5, and 3, I’m constantly on the lookout for things that can entertain and actually keep them engaged, ideally without relying on screens. Apparently, the 9,000 toys scattered across our house just aren’t cutting it! It’s a tall order, but the Toniebox has genuinely surprised me in the best way.
What Is the Toniebox?

If you haven’t come across it yet (except maybe on display at Kidstuff), the Toniebox is a soft, durable audio player made just for kids. Instead of buttons or screens, it works with adorable little figurines called Tonies. Each one plays its own set of stories or songs when placed on top of the box. There’s something delightfully simple about it, no screens, no fiddly menus, just pop a Tonie on and enjoy.
Why It Works for Our Family
What really makes the Toniebox special in our household is how it appeals to all three of my kids, despite their very different ages and interests. That’s not something I can say for most of the gadgets or toys we currently own.
For My 8-Year-Old: The Kid Who Is Never Tired

My eldest is navigating that in-between stage: no longer a little kid, but not quite a tween. It’s tricky to find things that are still engaging without feeling too 'babyish'. The Toniebox, however, has won him over.
At bedtime, if he’s too tired to physically read but not quite ready to sleep, he has been listening to The Danger Gang by Tom Fletcher and has just finished Captain Underpants. He’s even mastered the art of tapping the side of the Toniebox to skip chapters and pick up where he left off. He recently added some Roald Dahl Tonies to his birthday wish list - a huge win (does this mean we can finally stop buying so much LEGO?!).
It’s nurturing his love for stories in a calm, screen-free, and low-stimulation way that actually helps him settle to sleep.
For My 5-Year-Old: The Car Diva Queen

My daughter is deep in her Disney Princess era, and the Toniebox is her constant companion, especially in the car. What used to be long, restless drives full of “Are we there yet?” are now filled with sing-alongs with Belle. She even acts out bits of the stories - of course, she does! She also has a Paddington Bear Tonie, and I’m the one obsessed with that; it takes me straight back to my own childhood.
For My 3-Year-Old: The Tiny Boss of Audio Entertainment

My youngest might be the biggest fan of all. At three, he’s in peak “I do it mineself!” mode, and the Toniebox gives him exactly that kind of independence. He proudly changes the Tonies on his own and carefully selects which character he wants (usually followed by 30 seconds of Fireman Sam before switching to Percy saving Sodor Island).
He even adjusts the volume by squeezing the ears, often with absolutely no regard for the rest of us in the room. Classic three-year-old.
At night, he takes the Toniebox to bed and pops on a sweet little sheep that plays calming, nursery bedtime sounds. Perfect for young kids.
After years of reading bedtime stories, I’ll be honest - I’m enjoying the occasional night off when they choose a Tonie instead!
Durable, Intuitive, and Surprisingly Versatile

From a parent’s point of view, there are a few standout features that make the Toniebox worth every penny (and yes, let’s be real, it is an investment... in your sanity).
- Durability: It’s soft, sturdy, and built to survive toddler tantrums, daily lugging from room to room, and even being mistaken for a chew toy by our new puppy. I can not be more grateful for its sturdiness.
- Simplicity: No screens, no confusing menus, no tiny buttons - just intuitive, child-friendly design. Even my three-year-old can use it without help.
- Portability: It’s lightweight and small enough to take in the car, to friends’ houses, or on holiday. So far, it's come just about everywhere with us.
- Customisation: You can even buy a Creative Tonie to record your own stories or messages. We haven’t tried this yet, but it’s definitely on the to-do list.
A Rare Find That Grows With Your Child
One of the things I love most is that the Toniebox actually grows with your child. What starts off with nursery rhymes and sing-alongs for toddlers becomes full chapter books and educational content for older kids. It’s not something they’ll outgrow quickly; it evolves with their interests and ages.
Final Thoughts
In a world filled with screens, overstimulation, and noisy plastic toys that mysteriously turn on at 2 a.m., the Toniebox is an absolute gem. It brings back the magic of storytelling in a fun, engaging, and completely child-led way.
For our family, it’s encouraged imagination, independence, and quiet moments, three things I think every parent could use more of.
If you're looking for a high-quality, versatile, and screen-free alternative to keep your little ones entertained, I genuinely can’t recommend the Toniebox enough. It’s become a cherished part of our home, and I believe it will remain so for many years to come.
