The Pedal Parks Popping Up In Sydney❜s East
- Family
Randwick Council is trialling pop-up pedal parks at Clovelly Beach and Chifley Sports Reserve car parks to provide safe, open recreational spaces for local families. This follows a trend that gained traction during the COVID-19 pandemic, when closed car parks were inadvertently turned into play spaces and exercise hubs for activities like bike riding, skateboarding, handball games, bouncing basketballs and scootering,
The Council has since received an influx of requests to maintain these recreational spaces throughout winter.
“It was really great to see how the community re-imagined the use of this public space during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic," Randwick Mayor Danny Said explained. "They turned disused asphalt into a place of healthy community interaction, fun and learning. Kids learnt to ride a bike for the first time and practised tricks on scooters, while others played handball and basketball."
“With many of our beachside car parks lightly used over winter, this is an opportunity to trial pop up winter pedal parks to provide more open space for local families to use for recreation and physical activity.”
Both the Clovelly and Chifley Sports Field carparks will be partially closed for the rest of winter so that they can be used by the community, and the ‘trial closure’ could be a template for pop-up ‘winter-gardens’ to be created annually.
This year, the pop-up pedal parks will be open from Friday 26th June to Monday 31st August 2020.
