It is said that Melbourne now boasts the world's largest Greek population outside of Greece, so it seems only fitting that a little piece of Athens will soon be erected in one of the city's most celebrated landmarks.

The highly-anticipated winner of the annual NGV Architecture Commission for 2022 has just been revealed, so dust off your togas and get ready to behold an epic, inspired reimagining of the Parthenon, the famous monument on the Acropolis in Athens, right here at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The winning work, Temple of Boom, is the seventh iteration in the architectural series that will temporarily revamp the gallery courtyard. Adam Newman and Kelvin Tsang will recreate the Ancient Greek temple, a two-thousand-year-old architectural icon, layering their contemporary incarnation of the Parthenon with their own unique artistic stamp. Overlayed with large-scale paintings by Melbourne-based artists inspired by the vibrant colours and embellishments that once defined the original building, the huge replica with be imbued with layers of meaning, inviting us to reflect on the effect of time on all architecture.

The annual NGV Architecture Commission is a site-specific, ephemeral architecture project designed by Australian architects to enliven the gallery's Grollo Esquiset Garden, creating a summer sanctuary and creative event space.

The evocative new installation is due to open Wednesday 16 October 2022 at NGV International, as a community meeting place and an outdoor venue for a diverse program of NGV-curated events throughout summer, including performances and live music. Entry is free.
