Sydney’s streets are about to be buzzing with sneakers, sweatbands and serious determination as the Sydney Marathon returns this Sunday! Whether you’re running, cheering, or just trying to get from A to B, here’s everything you need to know about the road closures — plus the best spots to catch the action.
Sydney Marathon 2025: Road Closures and Where to Watch the Action
Road Closures to Know About
From the crack of dawn, key city roads will be closed, so drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel and allow for plenty of extra time. Major closures include:
-
Harbour Bridge & Western Distributor: 3 am–11 am
-
Cahill Expressway: until 11.30 am
-
City to Moore Park stretch (College St, Oxford St, Park St, Flinders St): until 3.30 pm
-
Macquarie St: until 4 pm
-
Anzac Pde (Moore Park to Kingsford): 5 am–1.30 pm
The Cross City Tunnel will be toll-free from 5 am to 4.30 pm, so that’s your best bet if you really need to cross town. Clearways will also be in force from as early as Saturday night, so double-check signs to avoid a towing surprise.
Best Viewing Spots
If you’re there to cheer on family and friends (or just soak up the electric atmosphere), there are plenty of great vantage points:
-
The Rocks (11.9km): Watch the runners hit their stride at the Transurban Rock Zone. First athletes expected around 7.05 am.
-
Martin Place (13.1km): A central hub for cheering, with the first pack coming through from 7.08 am.
-
Taylor Square, Darlinghurst (15.4km & 36.2km): A double-whammy spot where you can see runners twice — early on and then again near the finish.
-
Moore Park (29.4km & 34.4km): Head to Sydney Swans HQ for back-to-back marathon magic.
Want to follow along more than once? Start at the Barangaroo foreshore (6.36 am–9.55 am), pop up to Martin Place (6.42 am–10.25 am), then meet your runners at the Royal Botanic Gardens finish line for the big celebration.
