Where and When to Visit
McDougall Street, located in the heart of Kirribilli, is one of Sydney’s most popular jacaranda-viewing spots.
The trees typically reach full bloom from late October through early December. Early mornings are ideal for photos and peaceful walks before the crowds arrive, while afternoons bring a lively buzz of visitors soaking up the sunshine.
Temporary Road Closures and Safety Measures
Due to the growing popularity of the jacaranda season, North Sydney Council is introducing temporary traffic measures to ensure pedestrian safety. From 25 October 2025, McDougall Street (between Clark Road and Willoughby Street) and part of Hipwood Street (up to 50 metres from McDougall Street) will be closed to general traffic on Saturdays and Sundays between 7 am and 7 pm for approximately six weeks.
Only residents living within the closure zone will be allowed vehicle access during these times, and must show photo ID confirming their address. Visitors, taxis, and rideshares will need to park in the surrounding streets and walk in. Drivers in nearby areas are asked to slow to 10 km/h and give way to pedestrians.
Why the Closures Are in Place
While this isn’t a formal event, the council’s decision to close the road is based on safety concerns during periods of high visitation. The closures are legally approved and implemented by accredited traffic controllers.
This ensures a smooth flow of pedestrian traffic and allows visitors to safely enjoy the jacarandas up close.
Tips for Enjoying the Jacaranda Season
Bring your camera, the view of purple blooms arching over the street is one of Sydney’s most iconic sights. Visit early in the morning for softer light and smaller crowds, or later in the day for the full energy of the season.
Be respectful of residents’ properties, avoid blocking driveways, and leave no trace so that everyone can continue to enjoy this beautiful annual tradition.
